476 people informed and 12 complaints filed

Tuesday 20th February 2018

CALVIÀ TOWN HALL HAS INFORMED 476 DOG OWNERS ON THE ANIMALS' RIGHTS AND THE CAREGIVERS' DUTIES

This activity is part of an information campaign that has been carried out and has also involved the filing of 12 complaints for breaching the Animal Welfare Ordinance that came into effect in 2017

Calvià Town Hall has carried out a campaign aimed at people who own dogs to inform them on the rights and obligations set out in the Animal Welfare Ordinance, which came into force last year.

The campaign has been divided into two phases. A first informative part was carried out from 24th January to 3rd February. During those days, the municipal environmental watchmen supervised 325 dogs and informed their respective caretakers of the new municipal ordinance.

The ordinance contributes to the objective of increasing the sensitivity and respect towards the animals, establishing general behaviour guidelines to favour responsible ownership by the animal owners, tending to reduce the inconvenience that may be caused to the rest of the people who live, work or visit our municipality.

The second phase of the campaign, from 15
th to 18th February, was carried out in collaboration with the Local Police. During those dates, a total of 151 dogs were supervised and 12 complaints were filed for noncompliance with the municipal ordinance. The causes of the complaints were: 4 for carrying loose can, 3 for not carrying a bag to collect the droppings and 5 for not carrying a chip.

The Town Hall's councillor for Environment, Francisca Muñoz, has valued the campaign very positively since 476 dog owners have been informed on the novelties that the Animal Welfare Ordinance has incorporated, both the animals' rights and the caregivers' duties, emphasising that the great majority complies with the regulations and only a minority did not comply with any provision.

The Ordinance establishes the sanctions, which in the case, for instance, of not carrying a bag to collect droppings can reach up to 300 euros, and for not collecting the excrement on public roads can reach up to 600 euros as it is considered a serious offence.
