35 KG OF SEA FENNEL SEIZED

The agents located a group of young people introducing a sack full of this plant in a car boot

The Local Police of Calvià has seized about 35 kilos of plants of the species known in Mallorca as "fonoll marí" (sea fennel), classified as special protection in the Balearic Islands and that had been collected in the cliff area of Nova Santa Ponça. The Local Police of Calvià received the alert yesterday at midday by a neighbour of the area who warned them that there was a group of 5 young people cutting "fonoll marí".

The plants of this species called marine fennel (crithmum maritimum) were discovered by a patrol of agents in 7 bags that were inside a car boot. In addition, the Local Police of Calvià intervened the vehicle, since it lacked insurance and had not passed the MOT.

The occupants of the vehicle, according to the Local Police, explained that they had collected the plants. The collection of "fonoll marí" is allowed when it is for private use and as long as the quantity does not weigh more than one kilogram or does not exceed three plants. Possibly the amount of "fonoll marí" was intended to be commercialised in establishments or restaurants.

The bags of "fonoll marí" are confiscated until the Conselleria de Medi Ambient of the Government of the Balearic Islands picks them up.
