Coastline cleaning day at the Son Caliu beach

Tuesday, 31st July 2018

150 KILOS OF WASTE COLLECTED IN A COASTLINE AND SEABED CLEANING DAY AT THE SON CALIU BEACH

The Calvià Town Hall, through the Natural and Urban Environment Department, and the diving school Palma Diving have carried out this weekend a coastline and seabed cleaning day at Son Caliu, with the collaboration of the Hotel Son Caliu Oasis Spa, and with the participation of volunteers from the diving school and private volunteers, Civil Protection and Calvià 2000.

In total 150 kg of waste was collected from the area where the action was carried out, which is a sandy and stony cove. The beach is divided into two distinct areas: on the one hand, a more urban area and, on the other, a wilderness area where more of a natural environment can be enjoyed.

The objective of this initiative, which was attended by the Councillor for Trade, Natural and Urban Environment and Heritage, Francisca Muñoz, is, in addition to cleaning the beach, raising awareness of the seabed state on the Calvià coastine and the problems that waste represent for the natural environment, especially plastics and microplastics.

The Natural and Urban Environment Department of the Calvià Town Hall has planned several more coastal cleaning activities, once the high Summer season has ended.
