PABLO DAPENA AND LUCY GOSSAGE WIN THE 5th EDITION OF CHALLENGE PEGUERA MALLORCA TRIATHLON

A total of 1200 triathletes have taken the start of the race at Torà Beach

Pablo Dapena and Lucy Gossage have won a disputed Challenge Peguera Mallorca 2018. The spectacular weather which once again respected Peguera, with some clouds early morning and sun the rest of the morning, welcomed the 1,200 participants in the main race of Challenge Peguera 2018, the middle distance triathlon.

In the men's category, the Spaniard Pablo Dapena won after making a perfect race. The swimming section did not serve to mark differences as the group of favourites came out the water together, amongst them, Fernando Alarza, Carlos López, Jordi García, Daniel Baekkegärd and Dapena.

An incident marked the development of the race, Fernando Alarza fell going into the water causing him an injury on a finger, which made him leave the race approximately 15 km from the beginning.

The Danish Daniel Baekkegärd separated from the rest and took some advantage, approximately 2 minutes, Pablo Dapena followed him along with the Swiss Manuel Küng and the Slovenian Jaroslav Kovacic.

The race on foot took its toll on the, until then, leader of the race, the Danish Daniel Baekkegärd, and Pablo Dapena, in a lap and a half, managed to cut the distance that separated them and arrived at the finish line alone. The Swiss Manuel Kühn was second and the Slovenian Jaroslav Kovacic was third on the podium.

The women's race was also very disputed, although finally the main favourite, the British Lucy Gossage won. The swimming section started with the dominance of the British Fenella Langridge, who reached the first transition with almost two minutes ahead of the Belgian Katrien Verstuyft, the Polish Ewa Komander, the German Lena Berlinger and Gossage. The bike circuit offered another picture as Gossage quickly took the lead, getting an advantage of up to three minutes over Komander and Langridge, who arrived in second and third position to the transition, just one minute ahead of Berlinger. Gossage scored a very intense pace to win the test in a race on foot in which Berlinger managed to overcome her rivals and reach the finish line in second place. The Belgian Verstuyft improved her performance in this section and overtook Komander and Langridge, who finally were left with no options for the podium.
