Support to UNICEF for the cyclone in Mozambique

Calvià 6th June 2019

CALVIÀ GIVES 3,000 EUROS TO UNICEF TO ATTEND THE POPULATION AFFECTED BY THE IDAI CYCLONE IN MOZAMBIQUE

Calvià Town Hall will collaborate with UNICEF so that the population of Mozambique affected by Idai cyclone can have access to drinking water and safe sanitation facilities. This has been endorsed in an agreement by the acting mayor Alfonso Rodríguez Badal and the president of UNICEF Comité Balears, Mercedes del Pozo.

With the signing of this agreement, Calvià contributes 3,000 euros for the actions carried out by UNICEF: the installation of mobile latrines and drinking water supply in 10,000-liter tanks, as well as water and hygiene kits for families. Support is also given to WASH facilities in the child-friendly spaces that UNICEF is enabling in the most affected areas.

According to the data provided by UNICEF, it is estimated that 1.85 million people, including one million children, need urgent assistance due to the Idai cyclone effects, which has caused that access to drinking water has been compromised especially by displaced people in authorised shelters, which significantly increases the risk of communicable disease outbreaks, such as cholera and malaria.

The agreement-signing event was attended by the acting deputy mayor of Social Cohesion and Equality, Nati Francés; the general director of Social Development and Equity, Ana Pérez, and Patricia Greses, technician of childhood and cooperation policies of UNICEF comité Balears.
