Monday 10th June 2019

INFORMATIVE NOTE FROM THE LOCAL POLICE OF CALVIÀ

EIGHT DETAINED FOR ROBBERIES WITH VIOLENCE TO BRITISH TOURISTS OF MAGALUF DURING THIS WEEKEND

The stolen and recovered objects are mobiles, wallets and jewelry

The Local Police of Calvià has arrested eight people in different actions, in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday, for robbing tourists in the area of Punta Ballena in Magaluf. In all cases, when the alleged criminals were surprised by the Local Police of Calvià, they fled, being finally stopped by the police officers. The subtracted material are high-end mobile phones, SIM and Micro SD cards, wallets, watches, bracelets or a gold chain. It should be noted that a device for the extraction of SIM cards has also been confiscated.

The modus operandi of these groups, which are also dedicated to street vending, is based on couples of men who steal from drunk tourists using techniques such as the "bear hug" or a push. Meanwhile, one of the members of the group is aware and monitors if there is a police presence to notify the colleagues. The eight detainees are from Senegal, they are between 20 and 36 years old, and most of them live in Palma. One of them has a history of theft.

In these actions carried out over the weekend, two people have had to be treated for minor injuries. On Saturday, a tourist confronted the man who was robbing him, who threatened him with a bottle, they fought and the victim had to be sent to the Santa Ponça PAC. At dawn on Sunday, the person attacked was a Local Police officer of Calvià, for which the detainee will also be accused of attacking the authority. The proceedings of the case have been transferred to the Civil Guard.

In addition, Calvià Town Hall has come forward through its legal services to request restraining orders to detainees in order to preserve the general interest. On the other hand, in the course of next week and to reinforce security in the area of Magaluf, the Civil Guard will move to the Municipal Tourist Information Office that is adjacent to the leisure area.
