REI EN JAUME 2020 AWARDS CEREMONY

Juan Francisco Mota Magaña in the Comic category, Alejandra Frontera Orleans in Photography and Lluki and Kake Portas in Theatre are the winners of this year's edition

This noon the Premis rei En Jaume 2020 awards were delivered in an unusual event, since, due to the suspension of all the Rei En Jaume Festivities events, it has been carried out in a restricted way, without an audience, only with the attendance of the winners.

This year, for the first time, after recovering the awards three years ago, two new categories have been introduced: Comic and Theatre, discipline, the latter, to which 27 works have been presented with a very diverse origin: 12 from other countries, 11 from the mainland and 4 from Mallorca.

In this edition, the theme chosen was "The neighborhoods of Calvià".

The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has stressed that in a year as complicated as this, which is also very difficult for Culture, they have wanted to maintain these awards because Culture has to be understood not as something accessory, but as something that helps to train people, to polish and awaken sensibilities, to unite the municipality and to create cohesion.

On her behalf, the Deputy Mayor for Social Cohesion, responsible for the Culture area, Nati Francés, has highlighted the participation that has taken place this year, which has reached 53 works in total, a fact that, the Mayor has said, reaffirms the commitment of permanence and continuity of the Premis rei En Jaume de Calvià awards.

Premi rei En Jaume Comic award

Juan Francisco Mota Magaña has been the winner in the Comic category with the work Una dimonina a Calvià, awarded 1.200 euros, the publication of the work and 100 copies for the author. The jury, made up of Florentino Flórez, professor at EASDIB; Jorge Isaurralde, cartoonist, illustrator and designer, and Juan Lassalle, cartoonist and editor of Autsaider Cómics, have valued the perfect execution, the staging, the interesting narrative, the quick and effective approach of characters and the neighborhood theme exposed in a charming and direct way. The dimonina protagonist claims equality between men and women, something that the script points out without unnecessary underlining.

The jury has awarded a special mention to the work Milagro en Es Capdellà, by Pepmi Garau Salom, which has valued the endearing story that it tells about cures, miracles and neighborhoods that encourages union and reconciliation amongst fellow citizens.

Premi rei En Jaume Photography award

The Photography award, endowed with 1.000 euros, plus the possibility of exhibiting her work at the Town Hall, has been for Alejandra Frontera Orleans, for her picture Nuevas rutinas, in which the very adequate representation of the ''new reality'' in the municipality has been valued, focusing on the generation of older people as well as their resilience and adaptation capacity. For this work the cyanotype technique has been used.

The jury was made up of Alelí Mirelman Karger, Casa Planas cultural manager; Bruno Daureo, professor at EASDIB, and Jaume Gaviño, winner of the Premi rei En Jaume Photography awards 2019.

A special mention has been awarded to the work Utopia by María Isabel Gómez Bacete, who has been valued for the research and archiving process to collect tourist icons in the same fictitious landscape and the reflection on utopia as a turning point to question new futures.

Premi rei En Jaume Theatre award

Lluki Portas and Kake Portas have won the Premi rei En Jaume Theatre award for the theatre play Joy speed, in which the freshness, dynamism and innovation in the languages, the approach and the scenic proposal have been valued, highlighting the parallelism with the European context, besides considering the concretion of the characters and the relation of paternal-filial complicity very interesting.

The award is endowed with 3.000 euros, in addition to a theatrical residency and the premiere of the play with the box office for the company. The jury was made up of Bea Solivellas, representative of Illescena; Marina Salas, representative of the AAAPIB, and Pere Cortada, representative of the ATAPIB.

In this category they have given a special mention to the work Retrato. I met a young woman whose body was burning, by Aflel Teatro, in which the research work in the field of women and local histories has been valued, in addition to the work of social cohesion through the performing arts.
