Calvią treatment plant's reform begins

Wednesday 31st March 2021

CALVIÀ TREATMENT PLANT'S COMPREHENSIVE REFORM WORKS BEGIN WITHIN THE MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT IMPROVEMENT PLAN

The work amounts to more than 2.4 million euros

It will allow a better quality treatment at a lower environmental cost

Calvià Town Hall, through the public company Calvià 2000, has started the comprehensive reform works of the Calvià treatment plant, which serves the villages of Calvià and Es Capdellà, within the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Improvement Plan, which includes other actions such as the renewal of the Bendinat and Peguera treatment plants carried out in 2018; the provision of a sanitation waste treatment system, especially wet wipes, plastic waste and sand carried out in 2019, or the building of a water regeneration treatment for reuse in Santa Ponça that is currently being carried out.

The projected work, which has a cost of 2.448.637 euros and will be financed through the sanitation fee, began in March and consists of the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant on the same plot where the current one is located, providing it with the necessary equipment and dimensioning it to respond to current demands. It will be equipped with a deodorisation, sludge dehydration and a nutrient removal system. It will also be equipped with a water reclamation treatment system that will enable the reuse of treated water in agricultural and garden irrigation with full sanitary guarantee. All of this will make possible to achieve the best treatment quality level at the lowest energy and environmental cost.

The deputy mayor and president of Calvià 2000, Marcos Pecos, who has visited the works together with the municipal company's general manager, Javier González, points out that this action is part of the Plan that includes strategic investments in the Calvià treatment plants to guarantee quality and efficient management of these infrastructures, with the aim of improving the quality of treated water for reuse and moving towards zero spills. Regarding the Calvià treatment plant, he explains that the implementation of a water reclamation treatment system is envisaged, thus favouring the reuse of treated water with health and environmental guarantees, and also that contacts have already been initiated with managers of agricultural estates interested in the use of these reclaimed waters.
The Calvià-Es Capdellà treatment plant was built in the 1980s for Calvià village and, since 2011, is also used for Es Capdellà.

The works are carried out by the UTE Remodelación Edar Calvià, made up of the companies Facsa and VOPSA.
