Calvią holds the 'Jeux des Īles' 2022

Friday 13th May 2022

PRESENTED THE XXIV EDITION OF JEUX DES ÎLES CALVIÀ - MALLORCA 20/22

It will take place between 24th and 29th May in Calvià

The XXIV edition of Jeux des Îles Calvià - Mallorca 20/22, which will take place between 24th and 29th May at different sports facilities in the municipality of Calvià, has been presented at the Magaluf Athletics track.

Jeux des Îles is a five-day international sports competition with thirteen sports modalities (athletics, basketball, football, gymnastics, judo, karate, handball, swimming, tennis, table tennis, triathlon, sailing and volleyball) in which islands or archipelagos of Europe participate (Azores, Corsica, Malta, Martinique, Sicily, Guiana, Ischia and the Balearic Islands) with U-16 athletes, and in which stands out the return to the games this year of the Canary Islands delegation.

The Calvià Town Hall contributes to the celebration of the event by providing its sports facilities. This edition was scheduled for 2020, but due to covid-19 it had to be postponed. It should be noted that the participation will be higher than that initially planned by the organisation, a fact that shows that sports competition is making a strong comeback after the forced break due to the pandemic. About 850 people are expected to arrive in the municipality, including athletes, family members and technical teams.

The Jeux des Îles stand out for having a differential character in terms of promoting the sporting values of cordiality and 'fair play', also promoting social inclusion through sport. An environmental vision is also emphasised in different aspects, avoiding, for example, single-use water bottles, prioritising local consumption over low prices, and locating athletes in hotels within a radius of less than 10 km from the sports facilities to avoid unnecessary transport.

The celebration of this Jeux des Îles edition in Calvià is one more example of the Town Hall's commitment to continue promoting sport as a tourism deseasonalisation tool. Also, through the increase of links between sport and tourism, it is intended to continue providing added value to the destination as part of the objective of tourist reconversion in the area.

The presentation ceremony was attended by the president of the local organising committee and founding member of COJI, Marcel•li Got; the Town Hall's deputy mayor for Sports, Eva Serra; the manager of the Fundació per l'Esport del Govern de les Illes Balears, Pere Joan March Ballester; and the sports federations that provide support to the event, as well as representatives of sponsors.
