The acquisition of the Finca Galatzó, the creation of the Calvià por el Clima office, the creation of the marine reserves and the cleaning of the sea bed, are just some of the actions for which the municipality has been commended

The EU awards Calvià.

Attaining the highest possible quality as a tourist destination is one of the fundamental policies of Mayor Carlos Delgado and his team. Now this responsible and sustainable initiative of the municipality has been commended by the project "CoPraNet", a programme co-financed by the European Union by way of the European Fund for Regional Development, whose objective is to establish a worldwide network of coastal municipalities, sharing the same values for sustainable development.

Calvià, thanks to important projects and environmental actions, motivated by the "Calvià por el Clima" (Calvià for the Environment) office, which is managed by Jorge Campos, has been the only municipality of the Balearic Community to achieve the award "Quality Coast Awards 2009". This was presented to Mayor Carlos Delgado at the prize-giving ceremony in Amsterdam, on Wednesday, 27th May. This was attended by representatives of Town Halls, Governments, Government Institutions, Universities and Charitable Organisations of the 11 countries who took part in the project.

Eight municipal projects were what convinced the judges that Calvià deserved the "Quality Coast" label, an emblem showing the municipality's eagerness to encourage tourists and visitors to appreciate its nature, countryside, cultural patrimony and all aspects pertaining to sustainable development.

Therefore the acquisition of the Finca pública Galatzó (Galatzó Estate) in 2006, with a view to, not only protecting the territory, but as a measure for de-seasonalising tourism and relieving tourist pressure on the coast ; the declaration in 2004 of the Islas Malgrats and El Toro as marine reserves ; the "operation face-lift" for the coastal area with the demolition of 35 front line tourist establishments, which has made Calvià the leading municipality of the Balearics, with the most blue flags, are some of the projects which have gained recognition.

We should also include the improvements to the drainage systems of Calvià; the creation of the "Calvià por el Clima" (Calvià for the Environment) office, managed by Jorge Campos; the various methods of cleaning the sea bed, and the agreement with the Federation of British Tour Operators (FTO) to raise awareness of the Sustainable Travelife System in tourist establishments of the municipality.

With this prize comes important tourist promotion, as, by way of the “CoPraNet” project, a specialised magazine will highlight the projects developed by Calvià Town Hall and the other prize-winning organisations. This will also be included in various exhibitions of specialised fairs whereby the whole of the European tourist sector will be made aware of the environmental initiatives undertaken by the consistory of Calvià.
