In under two months over 300 national and international athletes have enjoyed this new facility
Magaluf's athletics track, which has made Calvià an all year round privileged destination for sport, is up and running at full capacity. More than 300 national and international athletes, from clubs in Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Germany, Switzerland, England, and the Spanish national medium distance team, who, until now, had trained in Portugal, Andalucía and the east coast of Spain, as well as in African countries, have used the new facility in just over a month - since the beginning of March, to be precise, when it was officially opened and taken over by the Town Hall.
These top level athletes, in addition to training on the Magaluf track, have enjoyed the pleasant climate that this area boasts. Furthermore some 80 children from the municipal athletics school use these facilities on a daily basis, and members of the Calvià athletics club (ADA) train there on a regular basis, not forgetting the residents of the municipality.
Magaluf athletics track is becoming increasingly well known for its training facilities, since opening last July by hosting the Spanish Junior Championship, with the approval of athletes, trainers and large numbers of the general public, who wish to take part in the training sessions of some of the athletes sponsored by well known brands, here at this state of the art track.
With the arrival of Spring, athletics activity really takes off, and proof of this has been the use of the facility, over the past few days, of eight German, one Swiss and five English athletics clubs, meaning that more than 130 elite athletes have trained there, using the athletics track, the indoor training area, the outdoor cross-training circuit and gymnasium. Training was held there for the Barcelona European Athletics Championship.
Some of the most well known are German athlete Meike Kröger (Club LG Nord Berlín), world number 4 high jump record holder, with a record of 2 metres, this year, Jonas Plass, who achieved 45”90 in the 400 metres and two outstanding female 4x400 athletes.
Two championships in June and July
Last July, at the inauguration ceremony, Calvià showcased its credentials to the world of athletics at the Spanish Junior Championship in which regional athletes won 8 medals – three of which were awarded to ADA Calvià. The same success is expected at the Balearic Islands' "Campeonato Absoluto de Atletismo" which will be held on 12th June and will be a trial for the challenge of the year : "XXIV Campeonato de España Promesa" on 3rd and 4th July.
The success of Bustos and Flórez
The maximum exponent of the distinguished generation of sports men and women of ADA Calvià, David Bustos, continues to be congratulated on his performance in the indoor track competition “Campeonato del Mundo Absoluto de Atletismo” which was held in Doha (Qatar) last month. Bustos, making his début with the first national team, came 7th in the 800m sprint with a time of 1:47:05, making him leader in Spanish senior ranking, 5th in European ranking and 9th in world ranking.Álex Flórez, who is also a member of ADA Calvià, won, also in the month of March, four silver medals (Cross, 3000m, 800m and 1500m, category M35) in the Canadian town of Kamploops during the “Campeonato del Mundo de Veteranos” (championship of world veterans) of indoor track. Thus Álex Flórez has become the first Spaniard to achieve four M35 medals (only athletes aged between 36 and 40 can participate), in a world championship.
