The Mayor introduces the 44 tourist police officers who will join the team to boost the summer season.

The Police opens the new canine guide service.

The local police staff will increase this summer with 44 new tourist police officers, who will work in the municipality for a period of 8 months and who have been employed for short periods, in previous years.

These new 44 police officers , who have been introduced by the Mayor Carlos Delgado; the Deputy Mayor , Bartolomé Bonafé and the Local Police Chief Inspector , Jaime Jaume Marcó, will reinforce the night shift, the central services and the Local Police. Therefore, a total of 13 tourist police officers will reinforce the night shift; 11 will be assigned for Central Services ( communications room and security in public offices) and 20 will join the Local Police Service.

The local police in Calvià has set six prior objectives for the summer season:

  •  Reinforce the citizens and tourists security in the municipality by preventive controls in all the areas in the municipality in both, day and night.
  •  Controls to avoid the use of public areas for prostitution.
  •  Cooperate in the public order during sport celebration events (world football championship).
  •  Control in the publicity municipal regulation application.
  •  Prevent illegal street sales on beaches and public areas during night and day.
  •  Noise pollution control.

More police officers will work during the night shift, this season. In particular, 47 police officers , a 40% increase with regard to last year´s figure.

On the other hand, the Town Hall will also increase the citizens security providing a new system to the Local Police: the Canine Service, also presented by the Mayor.

Its launch is due to an electoral promise made by the Mayor in Calvià, Carlos Delgado, who compromised in providing this new section to the Police officers, knowing that the police service effectiveness would notably increase.

Three dogs have joined this section: two for security and one for the detection of narcotic substances. Each dog has two guides which will guarantee the service throughout the year. It is to highlight that the Local Police in Calvià has become the pioneer in the independent community being the only one in the Balearics who provides trained dogs in order to fight against crime. And it is also the first police in the country who has decided to use the “Swedish Impact Muzzle”, a widely proved system in the nordic countries and France.

Canine Service:

       REX: Security German sheepdog. Up to now, he has worked in the security of the Santiago Bernabéu´s stadium, in massive public events. He is especially trained to work with the “ Impact Muzzle”, a system which reduces phyisical risk/damage.

       ZAR: German sheepdog with Czechoslovakian system. Especialised in the detection of narcotic substances. With great research and work instinct, trained to detect more regular consumption substances such as (cocaine, heroin, hashish, etc.)

       MAKE: Malinois Belgian sheepdog. Especially trained to work with theImpact Muzzle”. He is a very sociable dog and secure in his interventions.

The three dogs will patrol daily with their guides in case an intervention is needed. They will also, participate in programmed police controls not only for the citizens security also for vehicle and person controls and especially, with Zar, in the drug dealing and consumption precaution controls, in public and school areas.

Guides:

A police officer and 5 policemen. A group of voluntary policemen received a especific training given by the company Security Dogs ( company with great experience in similar projects and in security jobs, either in private security companies or in public administrations). After said training, each of the six guides, were selected on the basis of their affinity with each of the animals.

Infrastructure:

Three kennels have been built (with the possibility of an enlargement). As well as, two other rooms, one for the dog´s care and hygiene and another room to keep their food and medicine, etc.

There are also facilities for the guides, and a car and a trailer have been provided for transportation.
