300 kg of glass removed from the beach in Portals.

Last Saturday 23rd , a total of 20 divers, volunteers and Civil Defence staff, removed, from the beach in Portals Vells, a total of 300 kilos of waste materials, in another deep sea cleaning session organised by the Calvià Town Hall and, specifically, by the Calvià for the Climate municipal office.

Since Monday 18th, various cleaning sessions have been carried out, in collaboration with the Shark divers group, in which a total of 10 divers, combed the area and moved the collected waste materials to a point close to the coast, where, from last Saturday, mentioned items were taken out, from under the sea, with the help of a Local Police vessel, to be collected afterwards, by a lorry from the company Calvià 2000. Once the cleaning sessions were completed, the company, La Alacena de Mallorca, invited all the voluntary participants to an aperitif.

The deep sea cleaning programme, promoted by the Calvià for the Climate office, has as a main aim, two cleaning sessions per year. One, before the high tourist season and the second, after, in order to alleviate any possible environmental damage and to improve its tourist attractiveness. Up to date, more than 9 tons of residues have been collected within the various, carried out, deep sea cleaning sessions.

Also, this year, the activity has been intensified, with a third cleaning session, programmed in August in Cala Figuera, through the agreement reached with the Balearic Navigators Foundation. A ton of waste materials were removed in that occasion.

It was highlighted from the organization, as happened last year on this same beach, the amount of glass residues removed, specifically, 300 kilos (500 bottles). For that reason, an awareness scheme will be intensified within the visitors, who use this area, in order to make them use the appropiate available means for the deposit of glass residues.
