The Mayor Carlos Delgado, signed three agreements which will bring to Calvià, more than 40 rugby teams, next spring
The intense promotion of the rugby pitch located in Son Caliu, which the Mayor of Calvià, Carlos Delgado, is carrying out, together with the Sports and Tourism areas in the municipality, headed by the ICE manager, Manuel Onieva, and Jaime Martínez, director for Tourism, is already giving its first results, even before the inauguration of mentioned facility, which will be opening, the forthcoming 20th November.
Therefore, within the London tourist fair´s framework, the World Travel Market (WTM), Carlos Delgado, signed three agreements with representatives of companies dedicated to the promotion and organization of rugby events, which will allow the celebration of two tournaments between the 23rd and 24th April and the 28th and 29th May 2011, at the rugby pitch, as well as the Majorca Beach Rugby tournament, which will take place on the Magaluf beach, the 30th April, and the 1st and 2nd May, next year.
In total, more than 40 rugby teams, approximately 1.000 people between players and companions, coming from the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Spain, will meet in Calvià, during the months of April and May 2011, to enjoy, not only of the magnificent integrated facilities, but also of a 112 x 67 metre game dimension approved rugby pitch, which also allows the practice of football, and of a 25 x 12,5 metre indoor swimming-pool.
During their visit to London, Carlos Delgado and the Calvià Town Hall´s delegation, also met with representatives of clubs and with the Financial Director for the Rugby Football Union (RFU), organization which regulates the practice of rugby for men in England, who rated the facility as “excellent”.
The promotion of both, sport and sports tourism, carried out by the Town Hall during the last years, has developed an investment of 21 million euros for a first level sports facility network, such as the athlethics track and the natural turf football pitch, both located in Magaluf; the rugby pitch, as well as 6 indoor swimming-pools and 8 football pitches. The sport centres have been refurbished and numerous sports tracks have been built.
