New initiatives will be carried out in terms of circulation, surveillance, security and drainage and sewage network.

The Calvià Town Hall, through the Mayor, Manuel Onieva, has presented this morning a series of actions which will be carried out in Punta Ballena with the aim of minimise, as much as possible, the problems which are produced in a tourist destination of a remarkable youth interest.

One of the changes is addressed to the finalisation of the residents entrance and departure circulation problem, avoiding the crossing of the street of Punta Ballena. Thus, the Pinada street will become a two-way single carriageway and a new road will be opened between the street Federico García Lorca and Pere Vaquer Ramis Avenue. Furthermore, as occurred in the middle of July, the traffic in Punta Ballena will be closed allowing only the entrance to the emergency vehicles.

The number of pedestrian patrols will continue increasing from the beginning of the month of June, apart from maintaining the fixed points of police surveillance with patrol cars in visible spots in order to fight against the exceeds produced in an area where a great number of people gather every night. Also, the environmental conditions in the street and surroundings will improve, such as the urban furniture and lighting, the signage and the warning signs for the responsible actions of the tourists. Aboveall, the scrupulous surveillance will continue for the compliance of the municipal bylaws and other regulations by the leisure businesses, such as the security conditions of the establishment, private security, musical activity, advertising, etc.

Also, Calvià 2000 with the aim of improving the quality of the water on the Magaluf beach, expects to carry out a series of actions in the drainage and sewage network in order to avoid the direct spill to the sea of the waters coming from the activity in Punta Ballena.

With regards to the prostitution problems, they will continue with the idea of creating a specific work comission in order to unify the action criteria and for the creation of efficient tools for both, the police collaboration and the exchange of information. Also, they will continue seeking for the State´s commitment who is the responsible for said matter. It is to be recalled that the Local Police of Calvià has dedicated 1.500 hours this Summer to the specific control of this activity carrying out a total of 73 detentions of women, who under the appearance of the prostitution activity, commit delinquent acts such as violent robberies to tourists.

These initiatives arise from the last meeting's agreement of the Magaluf Tourist Season's Follow-up Commission, in which the municipal authorities met with the representatives of the hotel sector, the complementary offer, discotheques, taxi drivers,  and also with the Lieutenant in charge of the Guardia Civil's headquarters in Palmanova, Francisca Puerto and the Chief of the Local Police of Calvià, José Antonio Navarro.
