The presentation of the second edition of the Challenge Paguera-Mallorca counted on the most outstanding sportspeople who will be competing in the sport event.
Amongst the event's attendee, the Mayor of Calvià, mentioned the commitment of the municipality to the “binomial tourism-sport”. For Alfonso Rodríguez Badal , “Calvià is sport. Sport in the sport practice of its citizens, in the care of its premises, in the will that through sport it can also be an educational municipality… Furthermore, Calvià is sport as a deseasonalising element, also as a high-category sport event, known internationally as Challenge Paguera. Calvià has to be an active municipality opened to this type of sport events, therefore our firm commitment so that these events can be developed with the best of qualities possible.” Finally, the Mayor expressed his gratitude “to all those who collaborated in its development”.
The President of the Spanish Federation of Triathlon, José Hidalgo, highlighted that this event, ”is a city project”. Hidalgo also emphasised the locality as the example in the new initiative promoted by AFEDES and the CSD of “España destino deporte”, in which it will be searched the union of sport and tourism in a same enclave. After, the President of the FETRI noted the commitment and the quality of the Spanish triathletes and concluded expressing his gratitude to the commitment of the municipality to this event.
The Deputy Mayor for Sports, Eva Serra expressed her gratitude for the attendance of all the present “For the second consecutive year returns a competition which will gather around 700 participants, most of them international and which will mean for the municipality of Calvià a step forward in its fight against the tourist seasonal standstill, in this occasion through an international sport event”.
The President of the Hotel Association of Peguera and Cala Fornells, Toni Mayol emphasised the task which they have been undertaking in the last years, "from the Hotel Association we are very excited with this Challenge Paguera edition, we have tried to fight and form the brand Paguera sports region and convert the word deseasonalisation in a fact".
On his behalf, the Majorcan triathlete and one of the greatest sports attractions, Mario Mola faces his debut in middle distance “with a lot of excitement… it is a different distance I will have to confront with tomorrow in Peguera, but I am taking it with a lot of excitement and motivation and I have worked and prepared the competition”. The 2014 and 2015 world runner-up highlighted the circuits “it is a pleasure to be able to swim in this time of the year, in October, on high seas, I don't think you can do this in many places”. Regarding the itineraries, he stressed that “it is a pleasant circuit, despite the distance- I am not used to it – but invites you to enjoy the race, as it combines ascent stretches with flat ones… it is highly varied”.
Marcel Zamora, a Spanish referent in long distance with a wide track record in this modality, recognised being in love with area in which he has trained in previous occasions, “it is a grateful circuit. It is tough, it was devided in two parts with a first one tougher in the interior, together with a faster second part”. Amongst his main adversaries he highlighted the presence of Mola in the exit list, together with Filip Ospaly or Giulio Molinari, amongst others”.
Finally, Maja Stage Nielsen, bronze medal in the 2014 edition confirmed her good moment stating that “I am looking forward to competing, I am very happy to be here again. I feel fit and I am ready to give it all tomorrow”.
A 2015 edition which will begin tomorrow as from 9 a.m., with the starting line located on the beach of Torà in Peguera for after having swum for 1, 9 km arrive to the beach of la Romana and then address to the first transition. From then on, the triathletes will start the impressive and tough cycling itinerary. A highly technical 90 km sinuous stretch, which includes tough gradients ploughing through a sector which combines mountain, natural landscapes at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana (Declared World Heritage Site by the UNESCO), traditional villages such as the iconic Es Capdellà, the coast line, and some of the most known tourist areas in Europe merging into the interior of Palmanova, Magaluf, El Toro and Santa Ponça.
