Ecovidrio promotes glass recycling in the hotel establishments of Calvià

Ecovidrio, the nonprofit entity responsible for managing the recycling of glass packaging waste in Spain, in collaboration with the Town Hall of Calvià, launches a campaign to promote glass recycling in the hospitality sector of the municipality.


The initiative has begun with a first phase in which surveys and interviews are being conducted to catering establishments of Calvià to know first hand what their needs are and to adapt existing resources. In addition, Ecovidrio will provide businesses detailed information on how to recycle properly and the social and economic advantages of glass recycling.


In a second phase, and to facilitate glass recycling to those businesses that adhere to this initiative, wheeled buckets will be delivered, for easy transport and emptying packaging waste glass into containers on the street with the VACRI system.


Horeca channel

Ecovidrio's collaboration with the Town Council of Calvià, has a main objective that is to achieve an increase in glass recycling in the municipality through the hotel and catering sector. The organization promotes recycling via this channel, as Spain generates 50% of glass packaging waste sold on the market as single use. Its impact on recycling is critical because it is estimated that each establishment recycles approximately the same glass as 50 citizens.


In this regard, Ecovidrio has invested over 2 million euros in the last year and collaborates with 45,000 establishments of the Horeca channel, developing awareness initiatives and adapting means for recycling glass according to the specific needs of this group. Also, in recent years, the entity installed over 20,000 adapted containers, this means that for each one of these installed, glass collection is increased in that establishment in about 1.2 kg / day.


Glass recycling data in Calvia

According to the latest available data from 2015, citizens of the municipality recycled a total of 2,805,740 kilograms of glass containers. This means that each inhabitant recycled an average of 55.7 kg of glass per year.


As for the rate of containerization, the municipality has a total of 454 containers installed, so there is a container for every 111 inhabitants.
