CALVIÀ LAUNCHES AN AWARENESS CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT THAT TOILET WIPES ARE THROWN IN TOILETS
This practice has increased waste by 46% in the last 4 years
The Town Hall of Calvià, through the public company Calvià 2000, will launch an awareness campaign on the problems caused by throwing humid wipes in the toilet, which will consist in reporting on the need to make a good use of the sanitation systems so that citizens can have knowledge on the environmental, sanitary and services management difficulties that come from everyday actions that, although in many cases are the result of ignorance, have a direct impact on these areas.
According to the data from the last 4 years, the removal of solid waste in sewage plants, drives and sewerage networks in the municipality of Calvià has followed an upward trend, rising from 679 tons removed in the year 2012 to 989 tons removed in 2015, assuming an increase of 46% by weight of waste. This situation results in an extra cost of the maintenance services due to the increase of the cleaning operations and waste removals frequency by truck, as well as a greater impact on the maintenance and repair of equipment, given the great number of equipment breakdowns and wears that are produced.
This problem is solved by providing a wastebasket in the bathroom to throw all non-degradable solid elements, such as wipes, diapers, napkins, tampons and applicators, cotton buds, cotton pads, condoms, dental floss, band aids, etc.
Other products that cause problems in the sanitation and water treatment due to the risk of producing blockages and overflows are food leftovers, which should be thrown into the organic waste container, oils and fats, which should be deposited in the containers enabled for this use.
Moreover, from the environmental risk point of view, it is very important the domestic management of expired or unused medicine, given that the current filtering systems are not prepared to eliminate the wide variety of existing pharmacological components on the market, so upon completion of the filtering process, these components, considered in many cases emerging pollutants, will be sent out into the environment and cause environmental risks. These products must be deposited in the SIGRE information and collection points enabled in chemists.
