CALVIÀ JOINS THE EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK

Various activities have been scheduled that will culminate with the celebration of the bicycle and walking Day

The Calvià Town Hall has joined the European Mobility Week 2016, an initiative of the European Commission, coordinated in Spain by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, to be held from 16th to 22nd September under the slogan Intelligent Mobility. Sound economy.

This is an awareness campaign aimed at raising public awareness on the negative consequences that the abuse and irrational use of private cars have in the city, for both public health and the Environment, and the benefits of using sustainable means of transport.

During the European Mobility Week, an awareness campaign will be launched through social networks and the spreading of posters to raise awareness on the CO2 emissions produced per person and kilometre depending on the means of transport chosen.

To conclude the week, the bike and walking Day will be held along the Paseo de Calvià in order to promote the use of sustainable means of transport. In Calvià, this activity, which is developed since 2010 with an average attendance of 300 people, will take place on Sunday 25
th September 2016.

Also this year, it is expected that the bike and walking Day is complemented with the presentation of companies specialised in the promotion, development and design of renewable energy projects in various stands, that will show us solutions and novelties about the use of these sustainable energy sources.

The Town Hall is also undertaking and has plans of action concerning the improvement of facilities for the pedestrianisation (sidewalks, crosswalks, etc.), improvements in parking areas, creation of accessible facilities for people with reduced mobility, promotion of charging points for electric vehicles or the installation of a system to control occupied parking places in municipal parkings.

What is expected with the European Mobility Week is to raise awareness on the alternatives to the private car, promoting intermodality between the different urban means of transport, seeking to promote the development of good practices (cycling, public transport and walking), and raise public awareness on the impact that our mobility trends produce in the quality of life of cities, in energy efficiency and savings and in the care for the environment.

The European Commission has set two ambitious goals for urban mobility: gradually eliminate diesel cars in cities by 2050 and make a transition to a zero-emission urban logistics in the main urban centres by 2030. With this strategic perspective four priority areas have been established for 2016: innovation, digitalisation, decarbonsation and citizenship.
