CALVIÀ CELEBRATES "WOMEN WRITERS DAY" TODAY 17TH OCTOBER

Selections of texts of 31 women writers known throughout the Spanish state have been read in Catalan and Castilian

The Mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, today opened the "Women Writers Day" with the reading of a passage of the book Libro de la Vida de Teresa de Jesús within the framework of the commemorative ceremony held today 17
th October also in Calvià. It is an activity organised by Biblioteques de Calvià (Calvià Libraries) and by the Town Hall's Department of Social Cohesion and Equality and promoted by the National Library.

From Calvià Town Hall it has been proposed the reading - in Catalan and Castilian- of selections of texts of 31 known women writers from all over the Spanish state that has taken place from 10.30 a.m. at the entrance of the town hall. The readings have continued at 12 p.m. at Calvià market.

At the commemoration event, a group of men and women have read passages of works by authoresses such as Mercè Rodoreda, Carmen Martín Gaite or Ana María Matute. Amongst the honorees, also works of Caterina Albert (who wrote under the pseudonym of Víctor Català) or Gloria Fuertes have been recovered. Two students, representing the school Ses Quarterades of Calvià, have read a passage of a work by the Madrilenian writer.

From the National Library it is promoted for the first time "Women Writers Day" as a tribute to women writers coinciding with the Teresa de Jesús' festivity. This new initiative, which is intended to be held annually, seeks to reclaim the work and careers of the women writers so often set aside throughout history.

The women writers have left a great legacy in literature that has not been recognised enough, and to rescue them from oblivion this Day has been created, an important claim because often women in the world of literature, culture and history are forgotten, or at least relegated. The texts written by women respond to some different experiences and a different cultural tradition and so we should listen to what these authoresses have to say, as it was stated in the event's presentation.
