CALVIÀ PRESENTS ITS PROJECT TO RENATURILISE THE URBAN AREA OF MAGALUF AT THE XIII NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT CONGRESS

The Town Hall has participated in the technical session on renaturalisation of cities, urban green infrastructures and resilience

Calvià has presented its project of redevelopment and renaturalisation of the urban area of Magaluf at the XIII National Environment Congress (CONAMA). The Head of the Natural and Urban Environment Service of Calvià, Eduardo Cózar, has had the opportunity to present the project to increase the green infrastructure in the Marina of Magaluf during the second day of the Congress. At the exhibition, he has been accompanied by Paquita Muñoz, the councillor of Natural and Urban Environment, and the Head of the area, Juan Recasens.

After several months of work and participation in the preparatory technical commissions of CONAMA, the Magaluf project has been presented at a national level together with the plans elaborated by the City Councils of Madrid, Barcelona, Santander, Girona, A Coruña, Vitoria, Burgos and Illescas within the technical session on renaturalisation of cities, urban green infrastructures and resilience. In this session, chaired by Rafael Narbona Calvo, President of the Association of Landscapers of Spain, have presented the progresses that are being made in the renaturalisation of cities and in the management and promotion of biodiversity in urban environments.

The Department of Natural and Urban Environment of Calvià, together with the Department of Urban Planning, has held meetings with different groups of experts to achieve that the urban area pending urban development on the outskirts of Magaluf can be carried out under new sustainability and urban ecology criteria. For this purpose we work on the following points:

-Detection of sources of risks or problems that may prevent understanding the area under study from the point of view of environmental sustainability.

- Classification of the scope of Magaluf in possible zones of intervention according to their physical, hydrological and biological characteristics.

- Establish the intervention guidelines for the different areas of work that have been divided into: the northern area (rural area), the rural-urban transition area (Es Salobrar), coastal tourist area (consolidated urban area), coast line and surroundings of influence.

To this end, the general objective is to maintain, conserve and even strengthen the unique natural values existing in the area, especially those of recovery of wetlands existing at the time of the entry into force of the Water Law in 1985 and conservation of the 5 protected species of Limonium sp.

On the other hand, and within the scope of collaboration with the Department of Urban Planning - which is in the process of reviewing the PGOU (Urban Planning General Plan) in Calvià - we are also collaborating in the establishment of various strategic lines of action, such as sustainability and measures against the climate change.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the Ministry of Environment of the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Department of Botany of the University of the Balearic Islands, the public company Tragsa, Cruz Roja Baleares and the company Vistarga are also involved in the development of the now authorised project.
