THE CALVIÀ TOWN HALL PARTICIPATES IN THE CONFERENCE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF EUROPEAN VOLUNTEERING STRATEGIES

The meeting organised by the European Volunteer Centre was held in London

The Deputy Mayor for Citizen Participation and Youth, Fernando Alcaraz, participated on 6
th and 7th April in the Capacity Building Conference on the development of European volunteering strategies, organised by the European Volunteering Centre (Brussels) at the City Hall of London, with the aim of promoting the development of public volunteering policies in the municipality and sharing experiences and good practices with partners, civil society organisations, as well as other European cities and municipalities.

The Deputy Mayor, together with the general director of Citizen Participation and Youth, José Francisco Giménez Sánchez, shared the process of boosting volunteering and citizen participation in Calvià, as well as the project to create a Municipal Volunteering Agency in Calvià for the promotion and dynamisation of volunteering in the municipality.

The conference reflected on strategic thinking and capacity development in the area of volunteering, addressing the updating of the Political Agenda for Volunteering in Europe. Good practices on national strategies were exhibited such as the Volunteer Centre in Denmark, the Spanish Volunteering Platform and the Volunteer Schotland Centre. Especially significant was the space for the approach of the municipalities where European capitals for volunteering shared their experience in recent years, London (United Kingdom), Sligo (Ireland) and Aarhus (Denmark).

Throughout the conference various participatory workshops on volunteerism and local development, intersectoral collaboration and online volunteering took place. Also, talks on collaboration in European projects were held with Gabriela Civico, director of the European Volunteer Centre (CEV) in Brussels, Vicente Ballesteros, representing the Spanish Platform for Volunteering in the CEV, Gian Piero Farru, President of Sardegna Solidale (Sardinia, Italy) and Phil Boye-Anawomah Senior Projects Officer at Voluntary Action Islington (London).
