THE 'THIRD TRADITIONAL TATTOO & WORLD CULTURE FESTIVAL' INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL WILL BE HELD FROM 17th TO 24th MAY AT THE FAIRGROUNDS OF SANTA PONÇA
-The festival will feature Dr. Lars Krutak, one of the world's leading authorities in the anthropology of indigenous tattoo practices
The international festival 'Third Traditional Tattoo & World Culture Festival' will be held from 17th to 24th May at El Molino fairgrounds of Santa Ponça. The event, which has the collaboration of Calvià Town Hall, is an exhibition of tribal cultures and tattoos at an international level and is directed by Phil Cummins and Joanna Mlynarczyk. It is a multicultural event with eight days of celebration of culture, music, art and tribal and modern tattoo.
The event aims to show the public the work of artists and performers from indigenous tribal cultures. About 200 artists, of all styles and backgrounds, will meet in Calvià to participate in this event. More than 6,000 visitors are expected to attend the fair, who will be able to enjoy not only the presence of the best tattoo artists of the moment, but also various activities as well as exhibitions, conferences, seminars, documentary films, music and dance.
Lars Krutak
The festival will feature Dr. Lars Krutak, one of the world's leading authorities in the anthropology of indigenous tattoo practices. Doctor of Anthropology from Arizona State University (United States), he is currently associate researcher at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. At the festival, he will give a lecture titled 'The Cultural Heritage of the Indigenous Tattoo; Mythology, Magic and Sense 'as well as a photographic exhibition. Lars Krutak has lectured for all type of audiences around the world thanks to his knowledge on indigenous cultures. He has participated in documentaries of Discovery Channel, History Channel and National Geographic.
The festival will also host a seminar with Benny Wenda, the exiled leader from West Papua and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013, who will present us with the award-winning documentary 'Punks 4 West Papua'.
One of the marquees will be a cinema-theatre in which a series of documentaries will be screened by Pep Bonet, a renowned and award-winning filmmaker and photographer on the island, and other international filmmakers such as Rob Henry or Ash Brennan. Pep Bonet has done works on diverse subjects like his well-known project 'Faith in Chaos', a photographic essay on the war in Sierra Leone. Pep is also known for the documentaries made during more than 7 years accompanying the legendary Rock'n Roll band Motörhead and especially about his iconic singer Lemmy Kilmister, who died in 2015.
A charity auction will also be held at the 'Third Traditional Tattoo & World Culture Festival', with works being donated by the artists to ASDICA (Association of People with Disabilities of Calvià) and APNAB Gaspar Hauser (Association of Parents of Autistic Children of the Balearic Islands). In this regard, Pep Bonet has delivered material for its exhibition at the event and has donated a work for the charity auction. He will also put on sale a limited series of works signed by Lemmy of Motörhead, and will donate 50% of those benefits to the veteran traditional tattoo artist Ferank Manseed, who suffered partial paralysis due to a stroke last year.
This festival was previously held in 2010 and 2011. In 2010, Phil Cummins organised the first Traditional Tattoo & World Culture Festival on the island of Cobh, County Cork, Ireland, where it was held for 2 consecutive years. These two festivals brought together approximately 8,000 people.
The event venue will open its doors every day at 12 p.m. for the general public, and will close at 11 p.m. every night except for the weekend that will close at 1 a.m.
