CALVIÀ WILL HAVE ABOUT 4 MILLION EUROS FROM THE SUSTAINABLE TOURISM TAX TO FINANCE TWO PROJECTS IN THE PUBLIC ESTATE OF GALATZÓ AND THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF PUIG DE SA MORISCA

Calvià will have 3 new projects financed by the Sustainable Tourism Tax funds, after the plenary of the Sustainable Tourism Tax Commission had included them amongst the 62 approved projects, which were later ratified by the Consell de Govern. The three projects approved involve an investment of € 3,960,000.

The public estate of Galatzó will have two projects that will boost the use of the property as set out in one of the commitments of the investiture agreements of Calvià Town Hall.

Mountain refuge at the municipal public estate of Galatzó

The project to enable a mountain Refuge for hikers at the public estate of Galatzó involves an investment of € 1,410,683.97 and has the purpose of improving, expanding and facilitating the access of citizens to nature, being suitable for the overnight stay of hikers along the route GR-221. Thus, the network of refuges on the Serra de Tramuntana is being increased, the citizens' access to the knowledge of the natural and ethnological heritage is approached thus promoting the practice of an ecological and sustainable tourism. All this, with the ultimate goal of promoting the preservation of our heritage.

The project foresees the renovation of the Galatzó public estate old pigsties' building intended for Mountain Refuge for hikers and to include it in the Pedra in Sec route refuge network.

The solution adopted for the refuge consists in the creation of four areas subdivided into bedrooms with capacity for four or six places (in bunk beds), with a total capacity of 52 places.
These bedroom-spaces will occupy the central part of the building, for which the props of the central load-bearing wall will be made with metal beams.

Recovery of the public estate's hydraulic system

The second project also focuses on the Galatzó public estate. With a provision of € 784.838,89, a project to recover the hydraulic system will be carried out with the aim of enhancing the agricultural and environmental management of the public estate that responds to the objective of preserving the cultural landscape of a property on the Serra de Tramuntana.

The project aims to carry out a series of repair works, in order to put into operation the gutter and cistern of the hydraulic system of Galatzó, thus taking advantage of the water that is lost at the moment. Likewise, the implemention of this project has an added value when recovering a unique element within the ethnological heritage of the Islands.

The interest in making agricultural and livestock activities compatible with a public use is none other than to show a way of life that is gradually disappearing, especially in the mountainous areas of the Serra, mainly due to its lack of profitability. Therefore, the importance of a project to recover the hydraulic system in order to:

-Curb degradation and loss of use of a catalogued item of unique character in the area.
- Adapt an exceptional hydraulic space to the public visit, as an eminently representative example of a type of construction significant of the Majorcan tradition in danger of disappearing.
-Maintain and improve the public estate's agricultural, livestock and forest space as an example of the cultural landscape of the Serra.
-Keep the traditional uses that have drawn the characteristics of the territory. Thus, the Galatzó Public Estate, located within the Serra de Tramuntana territory, is a space that, due to its location, characteristics and possibilities, can become the perfect setting for developing collaborative projects with the Serra Consortium as the public estate of Galatzó is located in an enclosed territory with easy access and with outdoor spaces and infrastructures that would make it a comprehensive interpretation centre of the Serra de Tramuntana.

Archeological Museum

The project with greater endowment corresponds to the creation of the museum of the archaeological park of Puig de sa Morisca with an economic endowment of 1,765,174.15 €

The Archaeological Park of Puig de sa Morisca located in Santa Ponça is a project that has been developing from the Calvià Town Hall in collaboration with the UIB since 1997. It is a space of more than 45 ha, which includes one of the most important archaeological sites of Mallorca, many of them of public ownership. It also has a rich natural, ethnographic and landscape heritage.

The construction of the Museum will provide the Archaeological Park of Puig de sa Morisca with the necessary museum infrastructure to be able to host and present the archaeological remains recovered in the Calvià sites and in adjacent municipalities.

The combination of the Museum with the Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park, will make this set a reference site in the Balearic Islands, both for its tourist potential and for the integration of the cultural, natural and landscape offer. Because of this, the scope of influence of this equipment will not only cover the municipality of Calvià, but the whole of the island, with the consequent economic, social and image impact that this will generate.
