CALVIÀ CONTRIBUTES 3,000 EUROS TO UNICEF ALLOCATED FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE POPULATIONS OF ETHIOPIA AFFECTED BY THE DROUGHT
Calvià Town Hall will collaborate with UNICEF so that the most vulnerable populations of Ethiopia affected by the drought have access to potable and secured water. This has been endorsed in an agreement signed by Mayor Alfonso Rodríguez Badal and the president of UNICEF Balears Committee, Mercedes del Pozo.
With the signing of this agreement, Calvià contributes 3,000 euros for a 10,000-litre water tank that provides 5 litres of water per person and day to 2,000 people, at a cost of 1,560 euros, and to provide 22 boxes with 14,000 water purification tablets each one, which means a total of 308,000 tablets that will be used to treat 6,160,000 litres of drinking water, at a cost of 1,440 euros.
According to data provided by UNICEF, 6.4 million people in Ethiopia suffer from severe water shortages, and 47% of households do not have access to improved water sources.
The signing event was attended by the deputy mayor for Social Cohesion and Equality, Nati Francés; the councillor for Social Welfare, Mayte Albertí; the general director of Social Development and Equity, Ana Pérez; and Javier Bustamante, member of UNICEF Baleares.
