Coastline clean-up in Portals Vells.

MORE THAN 5 TONS OF RESIDUES WITHDRAWN IN THE 2017 COASTLINE AND SEABED CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF CALVIÀ
 

820 kilos of waste and a 5.30 metre-length fiberglass boat were collected by the volunteers this Sunday in the area of Portals Vells 

More than a hundred volunteers have carried out this Sunday a coastline and seabed clean-up day on the beach of Portals Vells and El Mago, coordinated by the Calvià Town Hall. More than eighty divers belonging to the clubs Apnea Mallorca, Isurus, Ondine, Palma Diving, Palomondrius, Protemar and Civil Protection carried out the cleaning on the seabed, and in parallel, more than forty volunteers from entities such as Creu Roja Illes Balears and individual volunteers cleaned up the coastal area. During the day, a total of 820 kilos of waste were removed from the area (700 kg of glass, 30 kg of containers, 40 kg of metals and 50 kg of rejection), in addition to a 5.30 metre-length fiberglass vessel.

Subsequently, the closing ceremony of the 2017 coastline and seabed clean-up campaign was held in the sala Palmanova, where all the actions carried out by the Town Hall were visualised and reported through the Natural and Urban Environment service, in relation to the marine environment, such as the environmental sustainability project called la Mar, the awareness raising campaign regarding the protection of Posidonia with the collaboration of Creu Roja, the environmental education programme aimed at students, the 3R Project, the participation in the Plastic Day of Port Adriano and in the Mallorca Live Festival project. 

At the closing ceremony, Mayor Alfonso Rodríguez Badal presented a diploma of recognition to the work carried out by the entities and diving clubs that have collaborated in the projects and campaigns to clean up the coastline, including the ones mentioned above, Zoea Mallorca, Big Blue Diving, Palma Yacht Crew, the Nautical Club of Santa Ponça, Port Adriano, Marineland, the Hotel Association of Palmanova-Magaluf, Civil Protection and Calvià 2000.


During the 2017 campaign, twelve clean-up actions related to the marine environment were carried out with a result of 5,363 kilos of waste removed (adding what was collected yesterday) by volunteers coordinated by the Natural and Urban Environment Service. More than 600 volunteers including 245 students participated in the clean-up activities.
 

Both the councillor for Environment, Francisca Muñoz, and the councillor of the area of Portals Vells, Alfonso Molina, participated in the cleaning Day.
