THE LOCAL POLICE OF CALVIÀ AND THE CIVIL GUARD ARREST A BAND DEDICATED TO THE INTRODUCTION OF COUNTERFEIT MONEY
The Civil Guard in collaboration with the Local Police of Calvià, have arrested four Britons as alleged perpetrators of a crime of forgery and introduction of counterfeit currency and have seized various amounts of notes.
On the 9th April, the Local Police of Calvià was informed of the payment with false bills in several establishments in the locality, the agents identified one of them, who at first carried five falsified twenty-euro notes and a dose of cocaine and marijuana. To complete the identification they moved to the room where he was staying to check the passport. At the time of removing the document from the room's safe box, they observed some more apparently falsified notes, so they brought the fact to the attention of the Civil Guard who took charge of the investigation, proceeding to the arrest of the four males.
Next, the Civil Guard requested the necessary authorisation to entry and registrate some tourist apartments in Magaluf, given the suspicions that the detainees could hide more bills or evidence effects in their address.
Once the registration was made, forty 20-euro counterfeit bills were intervened, as well as about 3,000 euros in legal tender notes, along with about 1,000 sterling pounds also of legal tender, money which is suspected to have come from bringing into circulation counterfeit money.
Counterfeit money would have been introduced in Spain by the detainees from the United Kingdom for its subsequent circulation in establishments of Magaluf-Calvià. They are bills with a nominal value of 20 euros which, once examined, it is observed that they have several security flaws, although at first glance they look real.
At the moment, the investigation is not considered finished, not ruling out that the detainees could have introduced currency in more establishments of the area as well as the involvement of other people, so new arrests are not ruled out.
