THE CALVIÀ SCHOOL FORUM AT THE EUROPEAN UNION'S GREEN WEEK
On the occasion of the World Environment Day
On the World Environment Day, to be held on 5th June, the schools of Ses Quarterades (Calvià), Puig de Sa Ginesta (Galatzó residential estate), Xaloc (Es Capdellà) and Jaume I (Palmanova), will participate in the school Forum promoted by the European Union, in order to present the projects they have developed since the 2016 school year, within the centre's Environmental Improvement Plan.
The Green Week, organised by the European Commission's General Directorate for the Environment, from 21st to 25th May, is an opportunity to discuss European environmental policies.
This year's motto is Green Cities for a greener future. Thus, issues related to life quality, the circular economy and other issues such as the exchange of best practices and the development of policies to involve local authorities and citizens in sharing the vision of a sustainable future, will be discussed in Brussels.
In addition to a conference in Brussels, the Green Week has a series of events and actions of partners that will take place throughout Europe, and it is in this context that the Calvià School Forum, which is part of the School Local Agenda 21, has been chosen to be part of the European Green Week.
The School Local Agenda 21 is an awareness and environmental education programme promoted by Calvià Town Hall and aimed at students in third cycle of primary public education centres in the municipality.
Its objectives are: education and raising environmental awareness to the boys and girls of the municipality through environmental, sustainability and climate change workshops in the schools of the municipality; their training in local citizen participation processes through participation workshops and the celebration of the Children's Municipal Participation Forum; education and environmental awareness to parents and teachers of the centres involving them in environmental and participation workshops; and the creation of the School Local Agenda 21 for each School Centre participating in the project, with the objective of implementing environmental projects.

'Ses Quarterades' school has developed in the Forum the project "Ses Quarterades que m'agraden" (Ses Quarterades that I like) promoted by the OCB in which the AMIPA and volunteers also participate. The project envisages the cleaning and recovery of native vegetation and the planting of Mallorcan tree varieties in a municipally owned space close to the school. The students in fourth year of primary education have worked on the native plant species of the Serra de Tramuntana and have presented their project in the Forum.
The project of the CEIP Puig de sa Ginesta students consists in the conditioning of an exterior space of the playground to make a gardened area with native plants. For its part, the CEIP Xaloc has focused on the Euronet 50/50 project that deals with energy efficiency and savings at school by studying its implementation to save and improve the use of energy in the school.
Finally, the CEIP Jaume I has developed the project "Milloram el nostre centre" (We improve our centre) which consists of a series of actions carried out by students in small groups on a weekly basis to improve coexistence issues during their break time, recycling the centre and caring for the gardens and school spaces. The students have distinctive signs in which they let others know the assigned tasks that they have to develop throughout the day.
