The contents of a Calvià 2000 rubbish pickup lorry catches fire at the Son Bugadelles industrial area
Calvià 2000 calls on the businesses of the industrial area not to throw hazardous waste in the street containers
It is the second similar incident, since the one occurred in October 2017
The content of a rubbish collection lorry burned down this morning at the Son Bugadelles industrial estate (Santa Ponça), without consequences for the two workers who were working on the route at the time. After passing through Madalena street, the workers of Calvià 2000 noticed the fire and the driver of the vehicle was able to park in an open space on Illes Balears street, where the content was downloaded.
In a fast and effective action, they have taken charge of the fire using the fire extinguishers of both, the lorry itself and the neighbouring Deixalleria, and later, the Bombers de Mallorca (Mallorca firemen) have finished extinguishing the combustion.
After a first inspection of the overturned waste, two carafes of a product labeled ethylene glycol have been discovered - common in mechanical workshops - one of them totally burned and the other with signs of having exploded, and that could probably be the cause of the ignition. The incident has been brought to the attention of the Local Police and the Civil Guard.
It is the second incident of waste combustion inside the dump box of a waste collection lorry occurred at the Son Bugadelles industrial estate in the last nine months. On the previous occasion, there was an explosion that slightly injured the two workers on the route.
For this reason, Calvià 2000 calls on all the businesses of this industrial estate not to throw dangerous products into the public way containers, but to dispose them following the laws and using an authorised manager.
