Information on the Calvià registry that will reduce the number of councilors in the next legislature

Calvià will count, in the 2019-2023 legislature, with 21 councillors instead of the current 25 due to the continued population decline that has resulted in the fact that on 1st January 2018 the municipality, according to data confirmed by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), had 49,333 inhabitants registered. The INE established as a date for all municipalities of Spain the population data as of 1st January 2018 as the cut-off date for the May 2019 elections, regarding the number of members of the Municipal Corporation. Calvià Town Hall presented allegations to the INE, which were dismissed as being incidents that did not affect the population prior to 1st January 2018.

However, in the absence of confirmation by the INE, the data handled by the Town Hall are that the population of the municipality will be over 50,000 inhabitants, with all the advantages that this implies, at the time of constituting the new Consistory in June 2019 The consideration of a municipality of more than 50,000 inhabitants is regulated by the Ley de bases de régimen local (Local Regime Bases Law).
