CALVIÀ 2000, CÀRITAS AND DEIXALLES PROMOTE CIRCULAR AND SOCIAL ECONOMY WITH THE SECOND-HAND CLOTHING COLLECTION IN THE MUNICIPALITY AGREEMENT
The municipal public company Calvià 2000 has signed a collaboration agreement with Fundació Deixalles and Càritas Mallorca, for the collection and treatment service of second-hand clothing and footwear deposited in containers located in the streets of Calvià or spaces of public municipal ownership.
With this initiative, Calvià 2000 materialises its commitment, reflected in its Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, to solidarity and circular economy, based on the combination of sustainable economic growth, social cohesion and the maintenance of the environment.
Càritas Mallorca and Fundació Deixalles will manage the clothes deposited in 26 containers (13 each organisation) distributed in all the areas of the municipality of Calvià. With these clothes, not only responsible consumption is promoted, by selling the pieces that can be reused; in addition, recycling is encouraged, using part of these fabrics to produce new textiles; and social insertion is favoured, through the generation of social and sustainable employment.
In 2018, according to data of the entity that has managed the second-hand clothing up to now, 66,486 kilos of second-hand clothing were collected in Calvià, which amounts to about 137,000 pieces of clothing recovered. The textile waste is, after the organic, the containers and plastics, paper and cardboard and glass; the fifth fraction that we generate the most, and has a high percentage of recovery, close to 90%.
