NIGHTLIFE WORK GROUP MEETING

Aspects related to infrastructures, cleaning and maintenance are discussed

An ordinary meeting of the Nightlife work group has been held today, in which various aspects related to investments in infrastructure, cleaning and maintenance have been discussed, especially for the next season.

Previously, at the beginning of the meeting, Mayor Alfonso Rodríguez Badal has transferred to the attendees that Calvià has joined the actions planned by the Consell de Mallorca after the suspension of the ITB tourist fair in Berlin, to move such an important destination such as the German and show Mallorca in general and Calvià in particular as safe destinations they are. In short, to convey the tranquility of a destination that has the ability to react and is very safe health-related.

Entering the matter, the mayor explained the investments that are underway and those that are planned to begin after the season in Magaluf-Palmanova and Santa Ponça.

Thus, in the first of these two destinations the renovation works of the Na Nadala square are being carried out, where a reorganisation of the square and the improvement of the driving plant and the canalisation are planned, with the anticipation that these two works are carried out in a few months. Work has also begun on Martín Ros García St. and from November they will continue on Torrenova St., in this case what it is expected is a more uniform area (continuing with Sant Miquel de Liria St.) improving infrastructures and also renewing sewage pipes. On the other hand, the renovation works on París and Hermanos Pinzón streets are about to be awarded, in which the architectural barriers will be removed, the two streets will be uniform and a car park for 130 places and a leisure area with an amphitheatre will be made. Finally, he made reference on the Magaluf seafront, a comprehensive renovation of the first line, which is expected to start next winter.

As for Santa Ponça, the comprehensive renovation of the Gran Vía Puig des Teix will begin shortly (which goes from Riu Sil street to Puig de Galatzó street), which will begin next week in the residential area and will resume in November to continue in the tourist area. An improvement action is also being carried out in the square where the taxi stand is in es Castellot, and it is planned that shortly the urban furniture can be installed on Avenida Jaume I, where a comprehensive renewal was also made, after the electrical underground wiring has finished.

In all these works there is, in addition, a common factor: all of them also provide for renewal of the rain and sewage pipes, which will improve odour problems in certain places or floods in case of heavy rain.

With regards to cleaning, it has been reported from the public company Calvià 2000 that 17% of cleaning resources are allocated during the high season and that this summer season there will be improvements with new sweepers and scrubbers that will be used, especially, to reinforce the second lines. Calvià 2000 has explained, however, that last year there was an improvement in the compliance with regulations when cleaning the streets in these areas. Looking ahead this year, special emphasis will be placed on the collection of the cardboard, asking for collaboration so that the establishments meet the schedules. It has also requested special attention to the rubbish coming from take-aways remembering that last year the Ordinance to define the areas of influence that are the responsibility of each establishment was modified.

Finally, important maintenance actions planned for this year have been reported for the entire municipality and that will also affect the leisure areas. The mayor explained that an item of 1.500.000 euros is planned to pave several areas and more than 300.000 euros to replace old lampposts with LED technology.

This is the fourth meeting that the Calvià nightlife work group holds, a body that meets every month and aims to address the so-called drunkenness tourism and move towards improving the quality of nightlife areas.

The Nightlife work group, chaired by the mayor of Calvià, is made up of different municipal departments (Tourism, Local Police, Commerce, Activities, Calvià 2000 and Equality), as well as the Hotel Association of Palmanova-Magaluf, the Hotel Association of Santa Ponça, ABONE and ACOTUR associations, Radio Taxi de Calvià and Civil Guard.
