THE NEW ISSUE OF ENTORN MAGAZINE ANALYSES MUSIC IN CALVIÀ, FROM TRADITION TO THE TOURIST INDUSTRY

Calvià has a solid training trajectory at the Music School, as well as a wide musical offer linked to nightlife

Issue 11 of the monographic magazine Entorn de Calvià entitled Music and edited by Calvià Town Hall was presented this afternoon at Es Generador youth centre. The publication has amongst its contents original articles written by professionals that review aspects such as the history of the School of Music, the band, the heart and school of 'ball de bot' (traditional dancing), live music for the entertainment of tourists, the figures of music, from Pere Josep Cañellas to date, or music in the public sector.

In addition, it offers interviews with Antònia Rubio, singer and 'ball de bot' teacher; Pablo Sanllehí, Los Bravos drummer; Chenoa, singer; or Toni Fernández, an expert recording musician. Other topics are also dealt with in depth, such as songs of oral tradition in Calvià and Es Capdellà at the beginning of the 20th century, the healing power of music, the musical programmes of Ràdio Calvià or the young music promises in the municipality.

During the Entorn de Calvià magazine presentation, the mayor, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, highlighted that the magazine, not only with this issue dedicated to music, but also the entire collection “helps us to build our history and, therefore, unite our municipality”, and he made special mention of music as a collective expression that helps to fix the memory of the people. The musicologist Bàrbara Duran made a small intervention in the presentation ceremony to value the research around music, with special attention to her research on traditional songs from the beginning of the last century. This was followed by a performance by the group Gipó, with pieces of Majorcan roots with jazz.

Calvià's Entorn magazine was recovered in 2013 and at this stage it was decided to focus each issue on a specific topic. Most of the writing and content is carried out by civil servants, but it also usually has the participation of UIB professors, journalists and experts in the field who provide unpublished material and data of interest to better understand the municipality of Calvià today and its future prospects. In previous editions, topics such as environment, art, architecture of the territory, gastronomy, cinema, tourism, women, sea, sports or migrations have been dealt with.
