HALF MARATHON MAGALUF RETURNS ON SATURDAY WITH A PARTICIPATION RECORD
In this 37th edition, almost 1.100 athletes have registered in the different categories and the 21-km half marathon places are sold out
In the presentation ceremony, the mayor of Calvià highlighted the importance of holding sporting events that extend the tourist season and encourage sustainable and quality tourism
The Half Marathon Magaluf, one of the oldest urban races in Spain, returns on Saturday 23rd April with almost 1.100 registered participants and all places sold out in the half marathon modality. This morning its 37th edition was presented, where the mayor of the Majorcan municipality of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, highlighted "the importance of holding sporting events of this magnitude at the beginning and end of the tourist season, since it allows reducing seasonality and encourages a type of sustainable and quality tourism”.
This edition will be marked by the return to relative normality after the pandemic, which is noticeable in the participation figures and also in the previous environment in the streets of Magaluf. As the president of Fundación Calvià, Toni Mayol, stated, the Half Marathon Magaluf is “a clear example of a community project”, in which numerous volunteers and local clubs participate. In addition, he remarked that this event "contributes to associating the image of the area with sport and to demonstrate that we have first-class infrastructures".
The Half Marathon Magaluf also stands out for its beneficial impact on the local economy. Both, the hotels, which will cover at least 2.000 hotel stays directly, as well as restaurants and shops in the area will benefit from this event, which promotes sports and quality tourism. Along these lines, the mayor of Calvià reiterated the great incentive of promoting the sports segment: “with an investment of around 850.000 euros in this type of events, we obtain a return of around 25 million euros and around 150.000 stays”.
Magaluf is already into the festive atmosphere characteristic of this event, which this year will intensify thanks to the participation of the Mallorca Live Festival, one of the most important music festivals in the Balearic Islands that will bring animation to the race. To this is added the Pasta Party, which will distribute food vouchers amongst the participants and that can be exchanged at any of the 21 restaurants in the area that have signed up.
The marathon data
The 500 places available for the half marathon modality (21 km) have been sold out for the first time in 10 years, which represents a 35% increase compared to last year and 60% compared to 2019, the year before the pandemic. There are still places available for the 10 km race, so the organisation encourages those lagging behind to take advantage of this opportunity to combine sport and tourism in the Majorcan municipality. There is also a third modality reserved for children and teenagers, with the aim of promoting sports and healthy habits in this population sector.
This edition is a record in terms of foreign participation, which accounts for around 40% of the registrations between the two main races. These athletes largely come from the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the Netherlands, although there are also athletes from America and Africa.
The event in its 21 and 10 km modalities will begin on Saturday 23rd April at 6 p.m. from the Magaluf athletics track. Both routes will cover the most characteristic places of the area and of Palmanova, with great prominence of the sections overlooking the Mediterranean. The slope of the itinerary is very low and only in the half marathon a maximum altitude of 28 metres above sea level is reached.
Athletes will have refreshment services, medical attention, a commemorative T-shirt, a medal after finishing the race, timing and participation in the Pasta Party.
The Half Marathon Magaluf is a community initiative of both, Fundación Calvià 2004 and Calvià Town Hall, sponsored by Fundació Mallorca Turisme. It also has more than 100 volunteers and the participation of various sports clubs in the municipality.
