PRESENTATION OF THE MALLORCA CHAMPIONSHIPS TENNIS TOURNAMENT
The ATP250 Mallorca Championships will be held from 18th to 25th June in Santa Ponça
The Mallorca Country Club tennis courts in Santa Ponça will receive for the second consecutive year the best players in the world, and five top 20 players in the world have already confirmed their attendance. The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, attended the tournament presentation event together with the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Catalina Cladera; the regional minister of Economic Model, Tourism and Employment, Iago Negueruela; Edwin Weindorfer, CEO and founder of the e|motion group, and Pilar Carbonell, director of e|motion Sports. The event was also attended by the deputy mayor for Sports, Eva Serra; the Santa Ponça councillor, Nati Francés, and Calvià Town Hall's general director of Tourism, Xavier Pascuet.
Mallorca and Calvià in particular will once again have a world-class men's tennis event. The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has thanked the organisation and the rest of the Public Administrations for their commitment, once again, to Calvià, for holding a tournament that "has a seal of quality, and it is in these quality products in what the administrations have to do their utmost”. The mayor added that these days “they will talk on how extraordinary our destinations, Calvià and Mallorca, are for practicing sports. An opportunity, without doubt, for Calvià to show itself as the quality destination that it is”.
The president of the Consell Insular de Mallorca Catalina Cladera wanted to highlight in the presentation: "We are happy with the fact that Mallorca is, with an event in the municipality of Calvià, the epicentre of world tennis with the best players, thus placing the island on the international sports map.
For his part, Iago Negueruela, regional minister for Economic Model, Tourism and Employment, wanted to highlight that "public-private initiatives are of vital importance in the commitment to transform a destination, also based on the media impact that the event will have with such an international sporting event of these characteristics. Thanks to the e|motion group that last year, at such a complex moment, took risks and was vital, betting on the tournament and the initiative (...) this trust must also be supported by the institutions”.
Included in the grass court tour, the Mallorca ATP 250 will welcome some of the best tennis players on the circuit such as the Russian Daniil Medvedev, the Australian Nick Kyrgios or the Spanish tennis players Pablo Carreño or Roberto Bautista. The Mallorca Country Club courts will receive a total of 28 tennis players in the singles draw and 16 couples in doubles.
Toni Nadal, director of the tournament, has announced: "Feliciano López has received an invitation to play the tournament in Mallorca. We are happy to receive very good players every year. Surely because of the quality of our grass courts, but fortunately the island is already distinguished by its beauty". Feliciano, famous for being an expert on grass, returns to Mallorca where last year he achieved his 500th victory on the ATP circuit.
Sustainability will be a fundamental pillar of the event and, in addition, all the proceeds from the sale of tickets for the opening ceremony of the tournament, which will feature a tennis exhibition by Tommy Haas, among other tennis legends, will go to the " Tennis Plays for Peace” programme that ATP created with the idea of helping the Ukrainian people.
