CALVIÀ TOWN HALL COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL RURAL WOMEN'S DAY WITH A CONCERT AT A MUNICIPAL ESTATE WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE ASSOCIACIÓ DE LA PAGESIA DE CALVIÀ
The commemoration takes place 90 years after the Calvià olive harvesters' strike call to claim their rights
Calvià Town Hall, through the Environment Service, commemorates International Rural Women's Day with a concert at an estate with the support of the Associació de la Pagesia de Calvià. The performance by Marga Rotger and Xisca Oliver is entitled 'Cant a la terra i a la dona' and will be held on Saturday, at 6 p.m., at Can Ros estate.
The councillor for the Environment and Ecological Transition, Rafel Sedano, said that with this initiative "the aim is to make this day known while continuing to work in favour of the incorporation of women into the rural world of Calvià". Sedano recalled that from the Town Hall's Environment Service, incentives are given so that, both in aid for the rural world and for access to the urban gardens of the municipality, there is positive discrimination in favour of women, or highest score, in the case of subsidies in the rural world for women who request help or join these activities.
In Calvià, International Rural Women's Day has a special symbolism, since this year the 90th anniversary of the 1932 olive harvesters' strike call on 15th October, which began two days later, on 17th October, is commemorated. On that date, 70 women olive harvesters from Calvià staged a strike to claim their rights to receive the same salary as men.
The historical fact has been collected in the book by Manel Suárez "La vaga de les collidores d'oliva de Calvià", and their memory is remembered in a village's square that bears the name 'Plaza de las Collidores de Oliva'.
The Marga Rotger and Xisca Oliver concert is included in the first edition of the Itinera Illes Balears Festival, which will take place between October and December, and which will feature concerts of jazz, blues, soul, gospel, world music and musicians that in their repertoire sing to the Islands. The objective of the festival is to value and make known the heritage of the Balearic Islands.
