THE MAYOR OF CALVIÀ REQUESTS THAT ZONING BE ELIMINATED IN THE FUTURE RESPONSIBLE TOURISM LAW SO THAT MAGALUF “STOPS BEING STIGMATISED”
The mayor defends that the municipality is “more than Magaluf, a street or an Excess Tourism Law”
Amengual emphasises on Radio Calvià that the municipality enjoys a great number of areas to promote quality tourism throughout the year
The mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, has set himself the goal of ensuring that the tourism that comes to the municipality is of higher quality. To achieve this, he does not only aspires to change the nomenclature of the regional regulations – from Excess Tourism to Responsible Tourism – but also wants to end the current delimitation. Not in vain, the zoning focuses "on a very specific space and streets in Magaluf", something that in his opinion generates "discrepancies" amongst shop owners in the area, who think that the map is "discriminatory." “We are trying to be fairer for everyone,” Amengual stressed in statements to Radio Calvià.
The regulatory modifications to the Responsible Tourism Law should focus, according to Amengual, on considering that excesses can occur "anywhere", so "a specific area should not be singled out", as is currently the case with Magaluf, Playa de Palma and Sant Antoni.
Juan Antonio Amengual's objective is that "when talking about Calvià and tourism we are not singled out by an area or by a street or by a law." And he highlights how they are fighting, both from the public offer and from the business community, to complete the transformation of Magaluf. The mayor highlights the “institutional harmony” that exists with both the Regional Government and the Consell de Mallorca, in synergies that, according to Amengual, will benefit the tourism sector and all economic activity.
