CALVIÀ WANTS TO RAISE AWARENESS ON THE ADVANTAGES OF ADOPTING A DOG AND GIVING IT A SECOND CHANCE
Adoption entails a responsibility throughout the dog's entire life, since it is neither an object nor a toy.
In the Christmas spirit, Calvià Town Hall has launched an initiative to promote awareness on pets and animal welfare. Calvià Town Hall calls for responsibility in the ownership of animals and promotes adoption as a way of giving a second chance to animals housed in the Calvià Animal Protection Centre and the shelter managed by the SOS Animal Foundation.
The municipal kennel welcomes around one hundred dogs every year, of which 65% are recovered by their owners and 30% are handed in for adoption, distributed 20% through the SOS Animal Foundation and 10% through the municipal service. However, some animals, 5%, due to their size, classification as potentially dangerous dogs (PPP) or their special character, find it difficult to find a home.
Many of these dogs have been affected by the irresponsibility of their former owners, for this reason animals cannot in any way be given as if they were objects or toys, they are living beings that require care and attention throughout their lives. Calvià Town Hall urges those people who are committed to sharing their life with a new pet to consider adoption, offering a second chance to many dogs that currently do not have a family. Including a pet into our lives involves carrying out a prior analysis, assessing the obligations it entails and reflecting on whether it will be possible to meet the requirements and needs of the animal, both physical and psychological, throughout its life. In addition, the Calvià Animal Protection Centre offers the possibility of visiting the dogs to any interested person.
Currently, a dozen dogs are waiting for a family. So far in 2023, around 40 dogs have been abandoned in Calvià. Currently, 100% of the Animal Protection Centre facilities are occupied, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue. Adopting is also a help for other animals that are in the animal protection centre and/or shelter waiting for adoption, by reducing the number of animals housed and, therefore, improving the conditions of those waiting for a new home.
People interested in adopting can consult the list of dogs available at the Calvià Animal Protection Centre through the Town Hall's website or visit the facilities at Ctra. de Calvià, km 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
It is worth remembering that in homes that already have a pet, the greatest gift that can be offered is to spend time with them, while keeping both, vaccinations and deworming, up to date in order to improve their well-being.
