CALVIÀ BEGINS ON SATURDAY THE SANT ANTONI AND SANT SEBASTIÀ FESTIVITIES WITH FOGUERONS (BONFIRES) AND TORRADAS (BARBECUES)

The municipality is filled with tradition with sixteen events organised by the associations of the various population centres

This week the foguerons and torradas begin in the municipality of Calvià on the occasion of the Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastià festivities. Like every year, in mid-January, the different associations and local entities of all the population centres of Calvià prepare to celebrate sixteen events to commemorate these special dates in the Mallorcan calendar.

The Sant Antoni Abad festivity, known as Sant Antoni dels Ases, patron saint of animals, is one of the most celebrated festivals in all areas. The San Antonio festivity is on Wednesday 17th January, but the celebrations in Calvià begin this Saturday, 13th January, from 3 p.m. in Son Ferrer, at 6 p.m. in Costa de la Calma and at 8 p.m. in Costa d'en Blanes.

Normally, the embers from the bonfires are used to roast sausages, 'botifarrons' and bacon. This can be done on Friday 19th, for the Sant Sebastià revetla (eve). The first will be at 5 p.m. on the beach of Cala Vinyes. Then, at 6 p.m., there will be a 'torrada' in Sa Vinya square in Capdellà and in Alcázar square in Portals Nous. At 7 p.m. it will be in Francisca Revert square in the Galatzó residential estate and in Miguel de los Santos Oliver St. in Palmanova.

Despite the cold forecast on Saturday, Sant Sebastià festivity, bonfires will be lit in El Toro starting at 5 p.m. in Plaza Europa, starting at 6 p.m. in Plaza Nueva in Son Caliu, and at 7 p.m. in Matilde Warning square in Peguera and in the Church square in Calvià village, where the devil will be burned.

On the last weekend of January, the traditional foguerons will take place on Saturday 27th at 3 p.m. in the Ágora school car park and on its 5-a-side football field; at 5 p.m. on Terral St. in Sol de Mallorca and at 6 p.m. in Plaza de la Conquista in Cas Català. On Sunday 28th, the last day of these festivities, it will be at 7 p.m. in Plaza de la Fuente in Palmanova.

For Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastià, on January 17 and 20 respectively, all of Mallorca lights foguerons. There is evidence of these recovered traditions since 1652, the year in which the plague did not affect Calvià village, apparently thanks to Sant Sebastià. And in 1918, Es Capdellà was not affected by the flu epidemic, which is also attributed to this saint.
