Introduction of the Wimax infrastructure in Calvià.

Calvià Town Hall within the framework of "Digital Cities of the Balearic Islands" has started up a project consisting of rolling out a telecommunications network iwhich will provide wireless technology (IMAX).

This project will allow Central headquarters at the Town Hall to connect up with other municipal entities, as well as bringing a new telecommunications provider to the residents of Calvia, thus supplying broadband via WIMAX technology along with all of the advantages this brings.

To the Town Hall:
  • This project will create links between the Town Hall and other Municipal entities dispersed throughout the municipality, some of which have been without coverage to date, for example the Municipal dog shelter or Finca Galatzó.
  • To fund this project there was an overall budget of 150.000 euros, so far some 30 municipal entities have been incorporated onto the network with some 130 IP telephone extensions This brings certain advantages to the Town Hall.
  • An annual saving of 44.000 € in connection quotas.
  • Incorporation of new satellites that previously had no ADSL cover, to the corpòrate network..
  • Improvement in telephone service, 130 new extensions with IP terminals; zero cost for internal communication and a reduced cost for calls to mobile phones.

To the residents:

In addition, Calvià Town Hall headed by The Mayor Carlos Delgado has awarded the tender for part of this network to telecommunications company Level (www.freefil.com) in order that:

  • Residents have access to a new telecommuncations operator which can offer broadband to all citizens of the municipality via wireless WIMAX technology.
  • The possibility of offering broadband service to those areas which previously didnt have coverage.
  • The aforementioned business will also carry out maintenabnce within the whole infrastructure of the municipality.

It should be noted that the first 625 users of this service will have the installatioin of the neccesary equipment subsidised by the council and that priority will go to those who do not already have broadband with another supplier and to people from this community.

In addition the Calvià infrastructure has been adapted to install WIFI connections and access in the Palmanova and Santa Ponsa beach resorts, thus allowing free access to residents and visitors to the area.

The plan for "Digital Cities" is to implant and develop a pilot scheme of digital municipalites, starting in Calvià and Formentera and branching out to some of the norther municipal groups using models that could be utilized in other areas of the Balearic Islands.

Taking part in the project are the Municipalities of Calvià and Formentera, Northern municipalities, Consell de Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera, The Balearic Government and the IBIT foundation, it is co-financed by the Ministry of Commerce , Industry and Tourism.
