Calvia handed over more than 11.600 euros to four families who have adopted two Russian boys and two Chinese girls.
The Mayor of Calvia, Carlos Delgado and the deputy Mayor of Social Welfare and Citizen's Support, Teresa Martorell, have handed over 11.665 € to four families from Calvia who during the course of this year have adopted a child from another country.
The presentation of this financial help, equivalent to 80% of the travelling expenses and accomodation costs incurred by the adoptive parents, during the period of time needed to complete all the paper work in the native country of the child. This iniciative is in line with the project set in motion by Calvia Town Hall, whose aim is to give support to the solidarity of the citizens in the municipality with the children from underpriviledged countries.
The families in question have adopted two Russian boys and two Chinese girls and the Council is already working on a new tender for the granting of similar concesions for adoptions taking place during 2005.
The issuing of these grants is a pioneer measure that has converted Calvia Town Hall into the first Municipal Council that has become involved in such a direct way in an adoption process, participating directly in the costs involved.
The families in Calvia who wish to apply for these grants must comply with the following and also some additional requirements: to have lived in Calvia continuously during the two years prior to the date of application, the need to travel and to stay in the native country of the child, the documentation proving the adoption.
These tenders for international adoption are in line with a global tender that the Town Hall is undertaking with the aim of regulating the granting of financial help, on the one hand to carry out projects of cooperation with the developement of underpriviledged countries and to devote attention to emergency situations and humanitarian acts of fulfilling urgent needs which may arise, through natural disasters, armed conflicts or any other kind of circumstances that need an answer that cannot be postponed..
