Of the 24 members attending the meeting, 19 voted in favour of the Town Hall’s Anti-crisis Plan and 5 abstained

Meeting of the Sectorial Council of Tourism.

The Sectorial Council for the Promotion of Tourism and Tourist Facilities of Calvià, in a meeting at the Town Hall on Tuesday, 13th January, backed, by a majority, the Plan devised by Carlos Delgados government team to revive the tourist sector and confront the present economic crisis, which is having a negative effect on tourism. To be precise, of the 24 members in attendance, 19 voted in favour of said plan and 5 abstained, amongst which were the political parties of the opposition, PSOE and UM.


During the course of the meeting, the Director General of Strategic Development (Desarrollo Estratégico) of the Town Hall, Antoni Rami, presented to the members in attendance, the various short, medium and long term proposals which they would like to put into action to address the difficult situation being experienced at present.


The Sectorial Council of Tourism viewed very positively the suggested measures, which are as follows:


  • Doubling the municipal budget for the current year for the promotion of tourism and multiplying by five the budget for investment to create infrastructure.


  • Urging the Balearic Government (Govern Balear), Consell de Mallorca and Turespaña to double their promotional budgets and publish leaflets and posters with tourist information in, at least, Spanish, English and German.


  • Urging the Govern and the Consell to support and promote large projects, beneficial not only to Calvià but to the whole of the Balearic Community, such as the Theme Park, Technical Sports Centre or the Artificial Reef.


  • Signing an agreement with the Govern Balear to permit the creation and maintenance of first class sports installations to attract tourism within sport.


  • Creating a consortium between state, regional and insular administrations to carry out the Plan for Complete Renovation (Plan de Rehabilitación Integral) of the tourist areas, for which the Town Hall has organised and published in the Official State Bulletin for the Balearics (BOIB), an ideas competition.


  • Urging the State to create fiscal benefits for the tourist seasonalisation by way of exemption of Social Security quotas in low season and the exemption of airport taxes for tourist flights in low season.


  • Applying for the inclusion of Calvià in the Plan for Spanish Tourism (Plan Turismo del Estado español).


  • Urging the Secretary of State for Tourism to sign an agreement for financial collaboration, similar to that signed for the reformation of Playa de Palma.


  • Applying for the modification of the General Tourist Law (Ley General Turística - LGT) with a view to making more flexible the principal of exclusive tourist use, regulating the condo-hotels, amongst other things, and redefining the instruments created by LGT.


Attending the meeting were representatives of the Consell de Mallorca, Chamber of Commerce (Cámara de Comercio); CAEB, Mallorca Tourist Board (Fomento del Turismo de Mallorca), the Associations of Hoteliers of Calvià (las Asociaciones de Hoteleros de Calvià); the Associations and Federations of Business (las Asociaciones, Federaciones y Agrupaciones empresariales), representatives of the small and medium companies involved in leisure activities in Calvià (pequeñas y medianas empresas de oferta complementaria, ocio y servicios de Calvià); the Balearic University (UIB), the workers union "Comisiones Obreras – CCOO" and the two representatives of the political parties of the opposition, PSOE and UM.
