Calvià goes ahead with the action agreed in the Plenary Session and Sectorial Council of Tourism and asks the government, in writing, for commitment to the Municipal Anti-crisis Plan

Calvià advances to reactivate the tourist sector.

Calvià continues to strive to revive the tourist sector and to endeavour to overcome the current economic crisis, which affects tourism, in particular. Several weeks ago, Calvià obtained the support of the Sectorial Council of Tourism for the Anti-crisis Plan which was approved last December, by majority, in a plenary session. The Mayor of Calvià, Carlos Delgado, consequently sent out letters to Central Government, the Balearic Government and the Mallorca Council (Consell de Mallorca), to involve said administrations in the action plans suggested by the Calvià government team, aimed at overcoming the crisis which is affecting the main engine of our economy: tourism.

The letters, sent to the Minister of Industry, Tourism & Commerce, Miguel Sebastián; to the President of the Balearic Government, Francesc Antich; to the Secretary of State for Tourism, Joan Mesquida and to the President of Mallorca Council, Francina Armengol, included the various actions proposed by the Town Hall to ease the difficult economic situation and at the same time, requested their collaboration in order to put them into practice.

Plan for Complete Renovation (Plan de Rehabilitación Integral)

Firstly, the Balearic Government is urged to apply to the Secretary of State for Tourism to include the Plan for Complete Renovation of the tourist areas of Calvià in the Plan for Spanish Tourism. Likewise, the state, regional and insular administrations are urged to create a consortium to enable them to carry out the actions, as defined in the Plan for Complete Renovation of the tourist resorts of Calvià, which, at present, is being put together with the help of an ideas competition.

Furthermore, the Secretary of State for Tourism has been asked to sign an agreement for financial aid, similar to that signed for the development plan for Playa de Palma, and the Balearic Government has been asked to begin the necessary adjustments to the current urban and tourist legislation, with a view to guaranteeing the necessary legalities required by the various sectors, and assisting in the fulfilment of objectives, such as flexibility for new projects for increasing tourism, such as condo-hotels and product expansion.

Key Projects

The letters also ask for the help and support of the Balearic Government and Mallorca Council in the promotion of the Key Projects of Calvià, such as, the Theme Park, Convention Centre, Technical Sports Centre and the Artificial Reef, which will, without doubt, bring abundant benefits to tourism, not just in Calvià, but throughout the Balearic Community.

With regard to tourist promotional materials, the Government was asked that all posters, brochures and the like be published, at least, in Spanish, English and German. It must be said that all of these proposals were accepted by majority, and with no opposition during the Sectorial Council of Tourism of Calvià. The Balearic Government, Mallorca Council and Turespaña were asked to double their budgets for tourist promotional materials and to put in place two new measures to lengthen the season starting with tax reductions. This last proposal encourages the state to create fiscal benefits with a view to lengthening the season by way of the exemption of Social Security quotas and airport taxes for charter flights in low season.
