Calvià beaches record 20 percent occupancy of the maximum allowed in June.
  • The data corroborate the absence of tourist overcrowding on the Calvià coast
  • The peak number of users was 3.372 people per day for 5.6 linear kilometres of beach
  • Calvià is the only municipality in the Balearic Islands with a computerised beach flow control system

Calvià beaches are consolidating themselves as a large leisure space for tourists and residents, far from the overcrowding perception. This is reflected in the data monitored during the month of June, which show an average maximum occupancy of 20 percent of the maximum allowed capacity. The data have been collected thanks to the capacity control cameras of the DTI (Smart Tourist Destination) system, pioneer in the Balearic Islands and currently the only one operating with this level of accuracy in the Balearics. The municipality's six major beaches have been monitored: the three in Palmanova (Es Carregador, Na Nadala, and Son Maties), Magaluf, Santa Ponça, and Torà in Peguera. Together, they total 5,6 kilometres of beach.

Juan Antonio Amengual, mayor of Calvià, pointed out that "the occupancy data for Calvià beaches debunk the narrative of tourist overcrowding. Our beaches are equipped with all the services, as evidenced by the 15 Q Quality Flags, which make us the third municipality in Spain and the first in Spain with the most flags. Furthermore, they are fully enjoyable for both tourists and residents, even during peak hotel occupancy."

As an example, he mentioned the case of Magaluf, a 1.600-metre-long beach with a 60-metre-wide strip of sand, whose maximum occupancy was 925 people: "Talking about saturation based on these data contradicts reality. Our beaches offer a space for leisure and relaxation for all types of tourists and residents, from groups of friends, young couples, seniors, and families. The available space and the comfort of our beaches make us the preferred option for visitors and locals alike.

Hotel and beach occupancy figures are similar to those for the same period in 2024. The maximum permitted occupancy percentages have been calculated based on the Beach Safety Plan. Thus, the peak occupancy at the six beaches was 3.372 people per day, distributed as follows: Es Carregador, 379; Na Nadala, 587; Son Maties, 452; Magaluf, 925; Santa Ponça, 664; and Torà, 365.

In percentage terms, the average occupancy is far below the maximum permitted levels. These figures were: Es Carregador, 22,2 percent; Na Nadala, 20,4 percent; Son Maties, 21,6 percent; Magaluf, 23 percent; Santa Ponça, 14,6 percent; and Torà, 16,7 percent.

In Torà, Peguera, the low occupancy rate allows guests to enjoy all services and contrasts with the hotel occupancy rate, which, in the same month of June, was 88,5 percent, according to data from the Peguera – Cala Fornells Hotel Association.

The DTI implements a management system to obtain strategic information that helps understand visitor behaviour and, amongst other aspects, analyse the possible evolution of tourism activity in terms of both tourism offer, and tourism and markets demand. The flow of people and vehicles, as well as variables such as water quality and temperature, are monitored. This ambitious protocol is budgeted at 4 million €, of which 60 percent comes from Next Generation funds and 40 percent from the Town Hall.
