Calvià Town Hall will deploy a special security and mobility operation this Wednesday 12th August, with around 60 Calvià Local Police officers, in addition to Civil Protection personnel and other security and emergency resources, due to the solar eclipse and the high influx of people expected in different parts of the municipality.
The operation has been designed to anticipate a foreseeable risk situation, guarantee safety, facilitate immediate attention to any emergency and to regulate traffic, preserving at all times the mobility of emergency vehicles, public transport and essential services during the hours of greatest concentration of people and vehicles.
The objective is to reduce the risks associated with high concentrations of people and vehicles and to ensure that emergency services can act quickly in case of any incident.
The plan was finalised this Monday during a meeting of Calvià Town Hall's working committee, where the latest details related to security, mobility, emergencies, fire prevention, beaches, and the coastline were reviewed.
Participants in the meeting included the Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual; the First Deputy Mayor and Head of Local Police and Civil Protection, Esperanza Catalá; the Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Beaches, and the Coastline, Elisa Monserrat; the Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Juan Thomás; the Councillor for Peguera, Benito Ferrer; and the Director General of Tourism and Communication, Jaime Mora; and the acting chief inspector of the Calvià Local Police, Antonio Pascual, as well as technical managers from the services involved.
Six strategic points to guarantee mobility
One of the main focuses of the operation will be traffic control. The Local Police will deploy officers at six strategic points in the municipality, from which traffic will be managed according to the day's developments, ensuring the passage of public transport vehicles, municipal services, and emergency vehicles.
The operation will be dynamic, and restrictions may be modified, expanded, or activated progressively depending on the occupancy of the observation areas, traffic volume, parking availability, and security and emergency needs at any given time.
The acting chief inspector of the Calvià Local Police, Antonio Pascual, emphasised the importance of planning journeys and making them well in advance. The Town Hall reminds residents that a significantly higher volume of traffic than usual is expected on that day, and that planning ahead will help reduce congestion and facilitate the operation management.
Access for new vehicles may be restricted when areas with the highest concentration of vehicles reach their established occupancy levels or when traffic conditions warrant it. For this reason, the Town Hall recommends avoiding private vehicles whenever possible and using public transport.
These traffic management measures aim to prevent a high concentration of vehicles from compromising safety or hindering access for ambulances, fire trucks, police, civil protection, and other essential services.
The Official Observation Zone (ZOO) at Santa Ponça beach will also be monitored by aircraft to track capacity and facilitate decision-making throughout the day.
Once the established capacity in this zone is reached, access will be closed. The Town Hall therefore reminds everyone that traveling to Santa Ponça does not guarantee access to the Official Observation Zone, as access conditions will depend on occupancy, traffic, parking capacity, and the needs of the security operation.
Santa Ponça, one of the main operational centres
Santa Ponça will be one of the main operational centres due to the expected large crowds in the area during the eclipse. The operation will be supported by Civil Protection personnel and an extended lifeguard service at Santa Ponça beach until 10:00 p.m., ensuring continued safety and assistance coverage during and after the eclipse.
Additionally, resources and vessels will be available to reinforce surveillance and response capacity for any incidents at sea, as part of the coordinated security operation planned for the day.
Maximum fire prevention measures
The Town Hall reminds everyone that it is prohibited to light fires and carry out any action that could create a fire risk, especially in forested areas, natural spaces, viewpoints, and their immediate surroundings.
Given the typical conditions of August and the exceptionally large crowds expected, the Town Hall strongly urges citizens to act responsibly and strictly follow the instructions of the security and emergency services.
Likewise, it is strongly advised against going to forested areas, natural spaces, viewpoints, or elevated points that are not specifically designated for observation and that may present access and evacuation difficulties, or a higher risk of fire.
Any carelessness could endanger both, those observing the eclipse and the natural environment, and hinder the work of emergency services.
Avoid unnecessary travel
Calvià Town Hall strongly recommends avoiding all non-essential travel in the hours leading up to and during the eclipse, especially to coastal areas, viewpoints, and elevated points.
The expected high concentration of vehicles and people makes it necessary to minimise unnecessary movement to keep roads clear and ensure access for ambulances, firefighters, police, civil protection, public transport, and other essential services.
Whenever possible, it is recommended to observe the phenomenon from home, tourist accommodation, or a nearby and safe location, without making any additional trips.
Access authorisation to an area does not guarantee parking availability. Vehicles must always park in designated areas and comply with standard traffic and parking regulations.
