The Calvià Town Hall held its first Technical Gardening Conference this Friday, entitled "Challenges in Urban Green Infrastructure Management." The meeting, aimed at professionals in the sector, was conceived as a forum for exchanging knowledge and experiences on the most modern and efficient management and maintenance techniques. The conference was organised by the Calvià Town Hall's Environment Department and the Spanish Association of Public Parks and Gardens (AEPJP).
The meeting was opened by the Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, who emphasized the importance of changing the concept of urban gardening: "Our forests and trees are a fundamental part of our natural heritage. "They are the lungs of our municipality, essential for the quality of life, well-being, and sustainability of Calvià. Therefore, this heritage must be preserved and cared for responsibly, applying the most modern and efficient management and maintenance techniques.
The mayor also emphasized that the objective of the event goes beyond mere aesthetic care, highlighting the need to address important challenges such as pest control, the replacement of trees with disease for public safety, and the creation of sustainable environments through the proper use of water resources and the management of plant protection products.
The event featured the participation of leading professionals in the sector, who addressed the main challenges of urban green infrastructure:
- Pedro Calaza Martínez, PhD in Agricultural Engineering and PhD in Landscape Architecture, and President of the AEPJP, delivered the opening presentation on "Urban Green Infrastructure: Moving Towards a New Management Model for Green Spaces in Spain."
- Damiana Amengual, Agricultural Technical Engineer and Head of Environmental Projects at the EULEN Group, presented on "Actions in the urban-forest interface of Calvià."
- Luis Núñez, Head of the Forest Health Service of the Balearic Islands Government (CAIB), spoke on "The pine processionary caterpillar: How is it managed? Present, future, control tools, and action schedules."
- Maria Antonia Company, Manager of Hags Spain, presented "The Future of Play and Public Space: New Trends in Playgrounds."
- The closing presentation was given by Marcos Castilla, Agricultural Technical Engineer, with his talk on "New proposals in urban tree management."
The Town Hall hopes that this first event will become an annual occurrence, with the aim of maintaining and preserving urban environments that are "healthier, more natural, and better for all our citizens."
