The Sala Palmanova hosted the fifth edition of the Calvià Environmental Awards on January 30th, a well-established annual event that recognises the most innovative proposals for transforming the municipality into a more sustainable environment by 2026. The competition, open to businesses, associations, and educational institutions, focuses on active conservation, environmental education, and the energy transition.

The gala was attended by the Regional Minister of the Environment, Joan Simonet, and the Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, the Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Juan Thomas, the Deputy Mayor for General Services, Isabel Bonet, and the Councillor for Benestar Animal i Món rural (Animal Welfare and Rural Areas), Manuel Mas. Members of the municipal government team and the jury were also present.

This year, a total of 15.000 € in prizes were awarded, distributed amongst six prizes to fund projects that promote biodiversity and local sustainability. "For this administration, investing in the environment means investing in life quality and the future. Progress like this year's would not be possible without the involvement of individuals and organisations that help us build a more responsible and conscious Calvià," said Juan Antonio Amengual, the mayor of the municipality.

Award-winning projects and local talent

The gala was notable for the strong presence of the educational community and agricultural associations, awarding the following initiatives:

  1. First Prize (4.000€): For AMIPA IES Bendinat, which proposes planting medicinal and aromatic plants in the existing school garden, creating specific recycling infrastructure for hazardous and high social value waste, and designing and installing a stationary bicycle connected to a dynamo and an electric scooter charging system. All of this aims to promote sustainability, environmental education, the energy transition, and waste reduction.
  2. Second Prize (3.000€): For APAEMA, focused on the audiovisual dissemination of the agroecological knowledge of local farmer Xesc Sans, combining tradition and sustainable techniques.
  3. Third Prizes: The following have been recognised:
  • IES Calvià (creation of a native botanical garden of native and Mediterranean species in an area of the playground without vegetation, to create an educational resource and a rest area and connection with nature for the students of the institute),
  • SEO-Virot (a guide to the birds of the Calvià coast, with the aim of disseminating information about the birdlife of the Calvià area, increasing interest in birds, and the environmental values of the municipality),
  • AMIPA CEIP Son Ferrer (planting 3 trees in different areas of the CEIP Son Ferrer primary school playground with the aim of providing shade, improving aesthetics and contributing to environmental sustainability),
  • and the Pagesos per la Terra Association (use of beef cattle as a forest and environmental management tool on the Galatzó estate, practicing transhumance to areas classified as high risk of fire in the Galatzó forest management plan).

The jury prioritised applications that directly address the municipality's environmental needs. Key criteria for selecting the winners included the social impact of the proposals, their sustainability, and their promotion of volunteerism. The originality of the actions, the environmental track record of the participating organisations, and the technical rigor of the submitted reports were also considered, awarding prizes to initiatives with the greatest potential to connect citizens with their natural environment.

An event marked by culture and institutional commitment

In addition to the awards ceremony, attendees enjoyed an audiovisual presentation highlighting the achievements of 2025 and various screenings that underscored the value of Calvià's natural heritage.

During 2025, Calvià promoted the conservation and management of its natural environment through strategic agreements and active management of the Galatzó Public Estate, where livestock farming has been revived and the protection of the black vulture has been fostered. In this iconic space, more than 2.100 school children participated in environmental education programmes. An ambitious renovation of its main building has begun, with an investment of five million euros aimed at reducing emissions and accelerating the ecological transition. Funds have also been allocated to the recovery of the agricultural landscape, control of feral species and improvement of key infrastructures such as the dairy farm and the network of urban gardens in the municipality.

In the area of animal welfare and support for the primary sector, the Town Hall has significantly strengthened the control of feral cat colonies through subsidies exceeding 100.000€, resulting in the sterilisation of more than one hundred animals. This work has been complemented by the modernisation of the municipal animal shelter and a new agreement with the College of Veterinarians to optimise the management of the pet registry. Furthermore, the commitment to rural communities has been reaffirmed through an allocation of more than 85.000€ in direct aid to 45 farmers, consolidating a model that combines economic revitalisation with sustainability and respect for Calvià's natural heritage.

The day was enlivened by live music from a band and a stand-up comedian's touch of humour, concluding with a group photo and sustainable catering provided by Ecoteca.
