This Sunday marks the inauguration of Magaluf's new seafront promenade, which has involved the complete remodeling and modernisation of 650 metres of coastline in one of the municipality's most famous tourist areas. The works, which were carried out during the off-season, are part of the process of transforming mature tourist destinations towards more sustainable, modern, and competitive models.

The project received a €4 million grant from the EU's Next Generation Funds under the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Tourism. The project also received support from the Balearic Islands Government's Tourism Department through Illes Balears Sostenibles (Sustainable Balearic Islands), which contributed an additional €1 million thanks to funds from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS).

The promenade was built in 1990, and this project not only renovated its infrastructure but also implemented a more modern design based on landscape integration that combines different species of native plants. After this first phase, a second phase will take place next winter 2025/26 to complete the comprehensive renovation of the entire first line of the Magaluf beach.

To celebrate this important improvement, the Calvià Town Hall has organised an extensive programme of activities that, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and under the slogan Magaluf for all, will include cultural, sporting and gastronomic activities for the whole family.

Official inauguration

The formal inauguration ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. with an institutional ribbon cutting at the junction of the beach promenade with Contralmirante Ferragut Street. Authorities, hoteliers, representatives of associations from the complementary offer and neighbours will attend, as well as members of the Escarrer family.

The inauguration takes place one year after the name of the street was changed to Paseo Marítimo de Gabriel Escarrer Juliá, in recognition of the founder of the Meliá Hotels International group and his contribution to the tourism development of the Magaluf area. The official opening ceremony will be broadcast live on the Town Hall's social media.

Following the ribbon cutting, the authorities will address the media and take an institutional walk to Jacques Sasson Square, where all attendees will be able to enjoy 'ball de bot' and 'xeremiers' (traditional Mallorcan dancing and musicians).

At around 11:45 a.m., a special recognition will be given to Mrs. Catalina Feliu, owner of the first house in Magaluf, who will be presented with the Cor de Calvià, a creation by the local artist Carlos Terroba that has become a symbol of the municipality and whose original work is located on the Palmanova seafront.

In relation to this recognition, the documentary Catalina i Magaluf will be screened, directed by María Pujalte Aleñar, which takes a fascinating journey through time to explore the profound transformation of Magaluf. The short film is, in essence, a reflection on the identity of a place through the life of one of its most deeply rooted inhabitants. The 90-year-old protagonist has been a privileged witness to the great changes the town has undergone.

The institutional event will conclude with the screening of a video at 12:00 p.m. on the 2025 annual convention of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), which will bring together around 450 delegates from British travel agencies and tourism professionals this coming October in Calvià. ABTA is the main association of Travel Agencies and Tour Operators in the United Kingdom and encompasses more than 4.300 companies in total.
