Calvià launches 10 key recommendations for safely enjoying the solar eclipse.

Calvià Town Hall has established ten recommendations to ensure safe viewing of the eclipse and avoid traffic congestion and overcrowding

1. Avoid travel and plan your departure and return
The Town Hall recommends avoiding travel to Santa Ponça and other viewing locations, especially by private vehicle. If you are already in the area, plan your departure in advance and stagger your return. Once the eclipse has ended, avoid leaving at the same time as other attendees to prevent traffic jams and facilitate the movement of emergency services.

2. Santa Ponça will have limited capacity

The capacity available on Santa Ponça beach during the eclipse will be significantly reduced due to the needs of the security operation. Given the resident and transient population already in the area, maximum capacity is expected to be reached quickly. Therefore, the Town Hall advises against traveling to Santa Ponça from other parts of the municipality or the island, especially by private vehicle.

3. Six Local Police checkpoints
The Calvià Local Police will deploy approximately 60 officers and establish six checkpoints to regulate traffic in the areas with the highest anticipated influx. The points where closures or restrictions will be in place are:

  • Cala Figuera road – roundabout 8 (Son Ferrer – El Toro direction).
  • Plaça Jardí (intersection of Jaume I St., Santa Ponça Avenue, and Bartolomé Rosselló Planas St.).
  • Costa de la Calma roundabout, near Bella Vista – Avenida de la Mar.
  • Cala Figuera road, access to Portals Vells.
  • El Toro access roundabout, near Avenida Neptuno.
  • Access roundabout to El Toro, at the level of Puig de sa Sirvi Avenue.

4. Absolute priority for emergencies and public services

Traffic management will aim to guarantee safety and maintain access routes at all times for emergency vehicles, public transport, and essential services. When the established capacity is reached, further vehicle access may be restricted.

5. Do not go to viewpoints, cliffs, or risk areas

The Town Hall strongly advises against going to viewpoints and elevated areas to observe the eclipse. The Local Police may restrict access, and it is reminded that there are areas with a risk of landslides and falls. Alternative observation points should not be sought in unauthorised areas.

6. Fire risk: take extreme precautions and protect the environment

Given the high risk of fire, maximum responsibility is requested. Avoid any behaviour that could cause a fire, respect natural spaces, do not leave any waste, and leave the areas completely clean.

7. Safety also from the sea

The operation will include boats to reinforce maritime safety during the eclipse. The instructions of the security and emergency services must be respected at all times, including in maritime areas.

8. Use approved eclipse glasses to observe the eclipse

Never look directly at the Sun without adequate protection. To observe the eclipse, specific and approved eclipse glasses must be used, and the safety recommendations of the competent authorities must be followed.

9. Follow the instructions and consult only official channels

The plan may be modified throughout the day depending on the number of people and traffic. It is essential to follow the instructions of the authorities at all times and check the updated information on the Calvià Town Hall website, social media, and official WhatsApp channel.

10. The Town Hall has set up a specific page with all the eclipse information

Calvià Town Hall has created a specific website dedicated to the eclipse, which centralises all the information of interest to the public: safety recommendations, mobility and traffic, affected areas, possible restrictions, information on the safe observation of the phenomenon, and the latest updates to the plan. It is recommended to consult this page before making any travel arrangements and to stay informed of any changes during the day.
