Calvià Town Hall has launched an information and awareness campaign aimed at shops and businesses in tourist areas to ensure proper waste management. The initiative has begun in the towns of Peguera and Santa Ponça, where staff from the public company Calvià 2000, along with Local Police officers, are visiting establishments to remind them of the obligation to comply with established hours and the correct waste separation.
This campaign is informational in nature as a preliminary step to the application of possible sanctions. The Town Hall has announced that, in the coming days, visits will be extended to other areas of the municipality to ensure that commercial activity coexists with civic responsibility and cleanliness.
Deputy Mayor Esperanza Catalá, responsible for Local Police and Calvià 2000, stated that the campaign stems from a desire to "work on two fronts: sustainability and image. We are leaders in glass and paper recycling, and we want to remain so; something that is possible, to a large extent, thanks to the involvement of businesses." Catalá added that, although "the vast majority are very aware of the issue, it is necessary to remind those who are not complying. We demand good manners and civic responsibility from residents and visitors, so we must also do so with businesses."
The data supports Calvià's commitment to the circular economy. Currently, the municipality holds the top position in the national ranking for selective collection of paper and cardboard within the Pajaritas Azules programme, promoted by the Spanish Association of Pulp, Paper and Board Manufacturers (ASPAPEL). Calvià registers a record figure of 60,40 kilos per inhabitant, far exceeding the national average of 22,72 kg/inhabitant and leading the list of municipalities with more than 50.000 inhabitants and provincial capitals.
Furthermore, Calvià has renewed the Ecovidrio Green Flag in the sixth edition of the #MovimientoBanderasVerdes. This recognition consolidates the municipality as one of the most active coastal destinations in the Balearic Islands in terms of sustainability, thanks to the direct collaboration of more than 200 restaurants, bars, and beach bars that work together with Calvià 2000 for the recycling of glass containers.
